In an email that NBC News got from Twitter, it said that it would be firing people on Friday.
In the email, which was sent Thursday night, Twitter said that starting Friday morning, staffers would get emails about their jobs.
“We know that this will affect a number of people who have made important contributions to Twitter, but we have to take this step to make sure the company’s success in the future,” the email said.
Many people had heard that Musk planned to cut the company’s payroll of 7,500 people after he finished his $44 billion deal late last week. As soon as he took over the company, he fired Twitter’s CEO, Parag Agrawal, as well as its CFO and head of legal, public policy, and trust and safety.

In a post on Twitter, Musk tried to reassure advertisers that the platform wouldn’t turn into a “free-for-all hellscape.” He also told the European Union that he planned to follow its Digital Services Act, which punishes companies that don’t control illegal content. On Monday, Reuters reported that Musk told the EU that he planned to follow the law.
Musk has also said that he wants to make it easier for people to say what they want. This has raised concerns that the changes could make users and advertisers leave the site. General Motors told the platform that it would stop advertising there.

Even before the buyout was done, people started to worry about layoffs. Twitter’s general counsel told employees not to pay too much attention to the rumors before Musk took ownership.

Some Twitter employees have said they want to be fired and get severance pay, and some are afraid that if they disagree with Musk, they could lose both their jobs and the severance pay if they are fired.
“When this nightmare is over, I better win some money,” one Twitter worker said.

He has also said that he wants to make a content-moderation council with “widely different points of view.” So far, nothing has changed.

Hate speech may have increased in the first few days that Musk owned the site. On Sunday, Musk tweeted a link to a false anti-LGBTQ conspiracy theory about the attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. He later deleted the tweet.
It was one of nearly two dozen tweets Musk sent out over the weekend, but few of them gave more information about how the site will look when he is in charge.
