A fresh local story claims that one of Netflix’s most anticipated new Brazilian shows for 2022 will not be renewed for a second season. After only one season, Netflix has decided to pull the plug on Maldivas.
The Natalia Klein-created and -starred comedy-drama premiered on Netflix around the world on June 15th, 2022.
The official summary for the show is as follows: “A young woman moves into a high-end apartment complex to uncover a mystery, where she meets the eccentric and skeptical locals.”
A Brazilian news organization in (via its People division) and reporters Gabriel Perline and Gabriela Ramos broke the cancellation news. The show’s cancellation was announced on October 25.
As stated on the site (from Brazilian Portuguese to English translation):
Even though Maldives was highly discussed on social media, the cast has already been informed that they do not need to make any further time commitments to the show.
Is there any correlation between how well Maldivas went on Netflix and its cancellation?
FlixPatrol reports that the show stayed in the top 10 for only 14 days while spending a total of 108 points throughout that time.
The Maldives also failed to get traction in a lot of other places. Only for 9 days did it make it into Portugal’s top 10s. It also improved its score in Jamaica and Mauritius by a small margin.
Between June 12 and June 26, the show was also listed in the Non-English worldwide top 10s, where it garnered 19.76 million hours before abruptly disappearing, as was the case with the top 10s overall.
Renewed or Canceled
According to whatsonnetflix, In 2022, Maldivas will be added to the growing list of canceled projects, though the actual number is almost certainly far higher because we don’t always hear about them.
Nevertheless, Netflix continues to produce a large amount of original Brazilian content. Whether you’re interested in Brazilian reality shows or American dramas, there are plenty of options coming soon.
Several Brazilian productions, such as DNA do Crime, B.O., Meu Cunhado é um Vampiro, and an untitled Candelaria massacre, as well as new seasons of Sintonia, Back to 15, and Smother-in-Law was released by Netflix in September 2022.
However, news on the future of additional Brazil-based titles including Reality Z, Kissing Game, Gloria, Summer Heat, and Omniscient has yet to emerge.
