The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a huge success for over a decade, and several actors have become known all over the world because of it. So far, only a few characters have been played by different people after their first appearance. But now, the MCU is getting another cast change. William Hurt’s role as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross will be played by Harrison Ford, who has been in movies for a long time.
No matter how important this role sounds, it’s probably not a good idea. Ford doesn’t look all that much like Hurt, and his feelings about franchise movies make it hard to understand why he’s in the MCU. Here are some reasons why it will be hard to take the recent recasting seriously, especially if Thunderbolt Ross starts “seeing red” soon.
Harrison Ford Is Not a Fan of Franchise Roles
Even though Han Solo is one of Ford’s most famous roles, he has been known to say bad things about the character. Ford thought that Han was a less developed and nuanced character than Indiana Jones, who had seen more of the world.
He even said in an interview that Han was “dumb as a stump.” Ford was thankful to George Lucas for giving him the chance to be in Star Wars, but he wanted to move on from the role so that it wouldn’t define him so much later in his career.
So, it’s surprising that he’s playing a role that will continue to be a big part of the MCU. At least for now, the MCU is probably even bigger than Star Wars, which makes it just as much of a “machine.” At the same time, Thunderbolt Ross is a much more complex person than Han, who is just a smuggler. But one possible direction for the character could ruin this nuance and make it even harder for Ford to believe in the part.
