How to Watch DCEU Films in Order

Which superhero is your favourite? Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, with its more than 30 films and a dozen series, is available to fans of Spider-Man and the Avengers.

However, if you’re a fan of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, you can watch them on HBO Max as part of the DC Extended Universe.

Warner Bros. changed the model for the cinematic universe by providing power to the director with 2013’s Man of Steel.

DC Films hired people like Zack Snyder, Patty Jenkins, James Wan, and James Gunn rather than erecting the brand around a single all-conquering producer (like Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios).

The results are inconsistent. Wonder Woman was a critical darling while Aquaman made over $1 billion.

The majority of the work, though, has not been favourably regarded by critics or fans.

In addition, the COVID-19 epidemic severely hindered the financial prospects of Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad.

Though superhero movies are meant to be our comfort food, the DCEU’s future is uncertain.

The Batgirl movie has already been scrapped at Warner Bros.

Discovery under new management. In 2023, HBO Max and Discovery+ are anticipated to merge, so it’s unclear where you’ll be able to access these films then.

DC Films has recently enjoyed success with Batman and the Joker, despite the uncertain future.

Also scheduled for release shortly are several films with a DCEU setting, including Shazam! in April and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam in October.

In December, Fury of the Gods. Here’s how to watch the movies in order if you’re ready for a rewatch or finally want to binge them all.

The Suicide Squad is still from the theatrical release order.

The simplest approach to seeing these movies is to simply watch them in the sequence they were released.

This eliminates the need to overcomplicate things or perceive things out of sequence. Man of Steel is the first film you see, then Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, and then Suicide Squad.

You can choose to watch the Justice League movie that came out in 2017 or you can jump ahead to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a four-hour director’s edit that came out in 2021.

(I advise seeing the re-release.) If you’re feeling very bizarre, you can also rewatch the Justice is Gray episode in black and white.

Following the Justice League crossover, come to Aquaman, Shazam!, and the Harley Quinn–starring Suicide Squad spinoff Birds of Prey.

Then, you can wrap things up with The Suicide Squad, which is a different (and superior) film than the one that was released in 2016 and Wonder Woman 1984.

Following is the watch order:

entertainment

2013’s Man of Steel

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Max (2016) Suicide Squad

2017’s Wonder Woman

Justice League (2017) / Justice League by Zack Snyder (2021)

Justice Is Gray in black and white

(2018) Aquaman

2019’s Shazam!

2020’s Birds of Prey

2020 Wonder Woman 1984

The Suicide Squad (2021)

Unfortunately, the DC Extended Universe doesn’t have a lot to offer chronologically for those who want to try a different watch sequence.

Wonder Woman, which is set in 1917 and set during World War I, would be the first film on your watch.

Once that was done, you would move on to Wonder Woman 1984, which is set in—you guessed it—the year 1984.

Following that, the order is the same as the release order because these movies’ events directly influence one another.

Suicide Squad and Justice League both make reference to and use Superman’s death from Batman v Superman as a story aspect.

The following movies, Aquaman and Shazam!, are set after the Justice League conflicts with Darkseid.

The timeline in Birds of Prey is purposely vague, but it takes place after Suicide Squad but before The Suicide Squad.

The Peacemaker TV series, which serves as a sequel to the second Suicide Squad movie, might then be included towards the conclusion.

Where are Batman and the Joker?

Do you want to know how Batman and The Joker fit into this?

The Joker and Batman do exist in the DC Extended Universe, but the versions of those characters that are the subject of these movies are not part of the DCEU canon.

In the movie Joker, Thomas Wayne, who is still alive, and Bruce Wayne, who is still a child, all play middle-aged versions of the character.

And Robert Pattinson plays a younger Batman in The Batman instead of Ben Affleck’s more senior iteration of the character.

It should be emphasised that both movies have nothing to do with one another; Joker is not Batman’s predecessor.

You are free to watch these films in whatever sequence you like, but if you want to keep things organised in your mind, you should probably watch them separately from your DCEU binge-watch.

2019’s Joker

The Bat-Face (2022)

There is still much to come.

DC Films continues to have several films scheduled for release despite the Warner-Discovery uncertainties.

Shazam! spin-off Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson, focuses on the Wizard’s former champion.

Shazam! Billy Batson and his superhuman clan will face off against the Atlas daughters in Fury of the Gods.

Barry Allen will break up the DCEU history in The Flash by travelling back in time to stop his mother’s murder, which is based on the Flashpoint comic book narrative.

However, it’s difficult to predict what will happen to this movie in the end considering star Ezra Miller’s legal issues(Opens in a new window).

The plot of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is still mostly unknown, however, it is anticipated that Arthur and his brother Orm will band together to preserve Atlantis.

Blue Beetle, about a boy who has an alien artefact linked to his spine and gives him a superpowered exosuit, is also on the calendar.

Regarding DC movies that aren’t part of the DCEU, Joker: Folie à Deux is a musical prequel to the 2019 movie with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.

Expect Batman to have a sequel as well as a spin-off TV show with Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
