Fans of “Queen Sugar” can soon “take flight” for the final time as we get ready to say goodbye to the Bordelon’s.
The critically acclaimed drama’s seventh and final season, which premieres on Tuesday, September 6, has received an official trailer from OWN. It was developed by Ava DuVernay, with Oprah Winfrey serving as executive producer.
“If we disrespect the past, we will also disrespect the future. As the clip opens, Rutina Wesley’s Nova, the eldest Bordelon sibling, begins to speak, giving a sneak peek at the dramatic and touching sequences that would unfold throughout the following 13 episodes.
The opening scene, set to “Love and Happiness” by Al Green, introduces the most recent changes in the lives of the Bordelons: With the birth of their second child, a daughter, Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) and Darla (Bianca Lawson) continue to battle their personal demons to secure the future of their family.
These demons include his deal with the devil that put the Bordelon sugarcane farm in danger and her ongoing battle with addiction and her history of sexual assault.

The return of her ex-partner Calvin (Greg Vaughan, a returning guest star), her ex-lover Chantal (Reagan Gomez, billed as recurring), and the reappearance of her long-lost high school love, played by Tracie Thoms, who joins the series as a guest star, seem to put Nova (Wesley) at a crossroads — particularly when it comes to love. This appears to be testing her budding relationship with her boyfriend Dominic

When Nova is allowed to turn her autobiography “Blessings and Blood” into a film, more drama is in store. No one appears too happy about the prospect, though, given the truths she revealed in the contentious book threatened to shatter family relations.
Aunt Vi (Tina Lifford) warns after Nova shares the information, “That book created a whole lot of pain for all of us.”
Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), who decided to relocate back to Los Angeles and make amends with her estranged husband Davis (Timon Kyle Durrett) after season 6, is not seen in the clip.
With the main action taking place in the fictitious Louisiana parish of St. Josephine, Variety has learnt that Gardner will not be a series regular in the next episodes, but her storyline will be followed in several episodes throughout the season.
In the teaser, Charley and Davis are nowhere to be seen, but their son Micah (Nicholas L. Ashe) is prominent because the new episodes follow his ongoing transition into manhood. In the video, Micah complains, “I just don’t know where I belong,” as he struggles with his identity.
First, he and his grandmother Lorna enjoy a touching moment (Sharon Lawrence, who returns as a guest star). “Micah, you possess a gift. She mentions his photographic skill and remarks, “You see things other people don’t. Then he and Aunt Vi engage in a tense argument. She retorts, “So, you think this is how mature men act? I’m a grown man; respect that,” Micah shouts.
The two-and-a-half-minute preview teases what is to come for everyone in the Bordelon family, including the love story between Aunt Vi and Hollywood (Omar J. Dorsey), touching scenes with Ralph Angel and Darla’s son Blue (Ethan Hutchinson), and the most recent with family friend Prosper Denton (Henry G. Sanders) and his daughter Billie (Tammy Townsend).
Returning guest stars this season include Glynn Turman (the late Ernest Bordelon, whose passing served as the impetus for the “Queen Sugar” tale), Amirah Vann (Parker Campbell, the family’s adversary), and Brian Michael (Toine, Ralph Angel’s high school friend and current police detective). Ann Nesby, Tanyell Waivers, and Vivien Ngô are returning recurring cast members.
Tanyell Waivers plays Keke, Micah’s ex-girlfriend, and Vivien Ngô plays Trinh, Ralph Angel’s ex-girlfriend. Kaci Walsall (“Naomi”), Lamman Rucker (“Greenleaf”), and special guest Vanessa Bell Calloway (“This Is Us,” “Shameless”) are all new to the series.

The final season also sees the return of seven directors from the previous seasons, including DuVernay, who directs the series finale after having directed the pilot and second episode in a full-circle moment, as well as Kat Candler, Stacey Muhammad, showrunner Shaz Bennett, Patricia Cardoso, Aurora Guerrero, and DeMane Davis.
Despite having directed critically acclaimed and award-winning films, music videos, and works of art, DuVernay pledged to only employ women when “Queen Sugar” premiered in 2016. She ultimately hired 41 women for the program and gave 39 of them their first credit as directors of television.
