At the end of this year, Dr Anthony Fauci will step down from his positions as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and as the chief medical officer to President Joe Biden.
This will mark the end of Dr Fauci’s nearly four-decade-long tenure as the nation’s foremost infectious disease specialist.
“I am announcing today that I will be stepping down from the positions of Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation, as well as the position of Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden,” said Dr Anthony Fauci.
Fauci stated that he will be quitting these posts in December of this year to move on to the next stage of his professional life.
Fauci, who is now 81 years old, has worked at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for the past 38 years, beginning his tenure there during the administration of former President Ronald Reagan.
In this capacity, he has been instrumental in directing the United States’ response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, as well as the West Nile virus, the anthrax attacks, pandemic influenza, and various threats posed by bird influenza, Ebola, and Zika.
In the year 2020, he emerged as a prominent representative of the federal government’s efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a statement, Vice President Biden lauded Dr Fauci’s contributions to the field, praising him for his “unwavering” commitment to the work and his “unparalleled spirit, vitality, and scientific integrity.”
“Thanks to Dr Fauci’s numerous contributions to public health, countless lives have been preserved not only in the United States but also all around the world.
The American people and the rest of the world will continue to benefit from Dr Fauci’s knowledge in whatever he decides to do once he departs his post in the United States Government, as was stated by Vice President Joe Biden.
Biden continued, “Whether you’ve had the pleasure of meeting him in person or not, his work has left an imprint on all of our lives.”
I am extremely grateful to him for the service he has provided to the community. As a direct result of his leadership, the United States of America possesses increased vigour, resiliency, and strength.
In his statement, Dr Fauci stressed that he will “not retire” and that he will “continue to promote science and public health and to inspire and guide the next generation of scientific leaders as they help prepare the world to meet future infectious disease challenges.”
After Fauci, the next-
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, and his advisers have publicly clashed on how to tackle the pandemic, what the appropriate message should be for the American people, and how to strike a balance between reopening facilities and limiting the spread of infection.
Throughout it all, Trump maintained that he respected Fauci but disagreed with Fauci’s strategy.
But when things were at their worst between them, Trump brought up the possibility that he would fire the doctor. As a result of threats made by Trump’s supporters, Dr Fauci’s safety has been increased.

In the year 2020, Dr Fauci revealed to Dr Sanjay Gupta of CNN that he was forced to hire security guards after death threats and abuse were directed toward his family.
Last month, Fauci gave an interview to CNN in which he stated that political constraints did not factor into his decision to finally step down from his job.
“It has nothing to do with pressures, and it has nothing to do with all of the other crap that you hear about, including all of the barbs, slings, and arrows. He stated, “That does not have any impact on me.”
