How do they choose the dates for the Social Security payments?

Each month, payments are sent out by the Social Security Administration on three different Wednesdays: the second, third, and fourth Wednesday.

It is entirely dependent on your birthday which Wednesday you will receive your money. The first of every month was traditionally the day on which recipients of Supplemental Security Income received their payments. We’ll give you a rundown of it.

Your payment will be sent out on the second Wednesday of the month if your birthday comes between the 1st and the 10th of the month.

If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of the month, your payment will be sent out on the third Wednesday of each month. If your birthday falls outside of that range, it will be sent out on the following Wednesday.

Your payment will be paid out on the fourth Wednesday of the month if your birthday comes between the 21st and the 31st of the month.

What happens if I am eligible for both Social Security and SSI benefits?

If you started receiving Social Security payments before May 1997, or if you are receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), your payment schedule will be altered.

Instead, your payment from Social Security will be mailed to you on the third of every month, and your payment from SSI will be mailed to you on the first of every month.

However, if either the first or the third of the month comes on a weekend, those payment dates will be moved.

For example, because Sunday, April 3rd, fell on this year’s calendar, you would have gotten your Social Security payment two days early, on April 1st, instead.
