According to two sources who are familiar with the matter, one of former President Donald Trump’s attorneys signed a letter in June asserting that there was no more classified information stored at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. This information was contained in the letter.
The letter that was signed by the attorney raises new questions about the number of people who may have legal exposure in the ongoing investigation into the handling of classified materials during Trump’s time in the White House.
The investigation reached a significant turning point earlier this week when the FBI carried out a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago.
Agents removed 11 sets of classified documents, some of which were labelled as “top secret/SCI,” which is one of the most stringent levels of classification.
This inventory list goes against what the attorney wrote in his letter. It’s possible that the prosecutors cited an obstruction law in their search warrant request because they removed that classified information after the letter had already been sent.
The sources did not specify when the signature was added to the letter or who added it. It was a continuation of communication between the Justice Department and myself regarding the matter.
The New York Times was the first publication to report the existence of the letter.
According to a previous report by CNN, after a meeting in June at Mar-a-Lago, during which officials from the Department of Justice walked away with classified information, investigators developed evidence, including testimony from a witness, that led them to believe that there was still more classified information in documents stored at the complex.
The Department of Justice is looking into three federal crimes as part of its investigation, according to court documents that were unsealed and made public on Friday.
These crimes are violations of the Espionage Act, obstruction of justice, and criminal handling of government records.
The fact that the crimes were included in the list indicated that the department had probable cause to investigate those offences while it was gathering evidence in the search. There have been no criminal charges brought against anyone.

CNN has previously reported that federal investigators, including Jay Bratt, the chief of the counterintelligence and export control section at the Justice Department, participated in the meeting that took place in June. Also present at the meeting were attorneys for Donald Trump, including Evan Corcoran and Christina Bobb.
According to a different source, representatives of Donald Trump claimed to investigators during the meeting in June that the president had declassified all of the documents.
Taylor Budowich, a spokesperson for the Trump administration, issued the following statement to CNN: “Just like every Democrat-fabricated witch hunt previously, the water of this unprecedented and unnecessary raid is being carried by a media willing to run with suggestive leaks, anonymous sources, and no hard facts.”
