The prize for the Mega Millions lottery has surpassed $1 billion for the third time in the game’s history. That’s with a capital B for billion.
Following the conclusion of Tuesday night’s $810 million drawing, which did not produce any winners, the amount soared beyond the $1 billion barrier.
Kristi Weeks, director of legal services for Washington’s Lottery, told McClatchy that the amount of the jackpot will continue to increase until Friday for the next drawing.
This is because ticket sales have already seen an increase. Because the majority of individuals wait until the day of the big drawing to buy their tickets for higher prizes such as these, the amount of the official jackpot won won’t be known until that day.
She stated that in the days leading up to the drawing on Tuesday night, sales of lottery tickets in the state of Washington totalled $5.4 million, with sales of Mega Millions of tickets accounting for $3.1 million of that total. Lottery ticket sales range between $2.4 million and $2.6 million daily, on average.
According to Weeks, the fact that this revenue is returned in the form of programmes such as the Washington Opportunities Pathway Account, which funds college grants and scholarships in addition to early education and other education programmes, is beneficial to the people who live in the state of Washington.
According to the website of the Washington State Treasurer, the Washington Lottery generated $229 million in income in the previous fiscal year.
According to Weeks, there is really no key to victory hidden anywhere.
She went on to say, “I do tell people that you’re not going to win if you don’t buy a ticket,” and she meant it.
And if you do happen to be the lucky winner, Weeks has these words of wisdom for you: sign the ticket first, store it away somewhere secure, and discuss the matter with both an accountant and an attorney.
Above all else, keep quiet about it until you’re certain that everything is in order. Winners have one hundred eighty days from the date of the drawing to turn in their tickets.
According to Weeks, if you aren’t attentive, you can find out that you have cousins and other family members that you were previously unaware of.
She went on to say that it is essential to play responsibly while simultaneously enjoying the game for its entertainment value.
She cautioned against using money designated for the rent or mortgage to purchase tickets. “And don’t use the money you set aside for groceries to buy tickets.”
The official website for Mega Millions states that the probability of correctly guessing all six winning numbers and taking home the jackpot is one in approximately 303 million.
Even if you only matched five of the six winning numbers, you would still walk away with a cool million dollars.
Winners have the choice of accepting their prize in a single cash payment equaling $602.5 million, or they can decide to receive 30 instalments spread out over 29 years instead.
The Internal Revenue Service also receives a portion of the winnings; specifically, 24 per cent of the money is first given to the government and then distributed to the winners.
The next drawing will take place on Friday, July 29 at 8 o’clock in the evening. A single play on a lottery ticket will set you back $2.
