Biden’s Pro-Abortion Politics Will Damage America’s International Reputation

It is no surprise that representatives of the Biden administration strongly disagree with the ruling of the Supreme Court that nullified Roe v. Wade.

But it’s alarming that they’ve condemned it for viewers outside of the country. Officials will diminish the legitimacy of U.S. foreign policy and damage America’s reputation in the international community by attempting to reposition the U.S. as the world’s leading pro-abortion nation.

Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was labelled “a terrible, dark, and frightening ruling” by America’s ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who also claimed: “I have traversed the world campaigning for women’s rights.

As a result of this choice, my own country stands out among industrialised nations worldwide. The State Department “will remain completely dedicated to helping provide access to reproductive health services and supporting reproductive rights throughout the world,” said Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Since the Roe v. Wade ruling and the enactment of the Helms Amendment, which forbids the use of government funding for abortions performed overseas, by Congress in 1973, abortion has been a topic of discussion in foreign policy.

The “Mexico City Policy,” put in place by President Reagan, required nongovernmental organisations to agree, as a condition of receiving federal assistance, that they wouldn’t advocate for abortion as a form of family planning abroad.

The policy has been reversed by every Democratic president since and reinstated by every Republican president.

In the wake of Roe, party polarization has resulted in this seesaw policy. However, the majority of polls indicate that more than 60% of Americans support abortion limits, particularly during the second trimester of pregnancy, which was formerly illegal under Roe. By sending it back to the states, Dobbs offers these voters a voice in the decision.

The Biden administration is spreading a radical pro-abortion viewpoint through national-security organisations.

That will decrease Americans’ faith in their own government, which would lower the country’s standing internationally. It will be more difficult to garner widespread American support on other issues that are crucial to the survival of the country.

Americans who oppose abortion should not be startled when officials ask them to approve pricey assistance or armament packages for allies or efforts to dissuade Chinese and Russian abuses of human rights.

A foreign policy that promotes abortion abroad is likewise a tactical error with long-term repercussions.

Abortion is strictly prohibited in many nations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and even most of the developed world errs more on the side of Dobbs than Roe.

The European Parliament and some Western politicians, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have joined Mr Biden in criticising Dobbs.

However, rather than diplomatic tact or even the laws and customs of their own countries, their words are more a reflection of the global solidarity of pro-abortion politicians.

Under Roe, the majority of European nations’ legislation would have been ruled unlawful. Only Iceland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom are said to have widespread access to abortion on demand throughout pregnancy, according to international organisations that support abortion rights.

For abortions performed after the first trimester, France and Germany demand medical explanations or other sad but infrequent occurrences like rape or incest.

Beyond 10 or 12 weeks of gestation, many North Atlantic Treaty Organization nations forbid elective abortion. Dobbs allows American states to match their laws with those of their allies in this way.

The Biden administration’s unwavering support for abortion is also a gift to the West’s adversaries.

It ignores the abortion-friendly policies of China and North Korea, whose cruel treatment of their citizens is compatible with their love for the procedure.

By 2020, there were over nine million abortions just in China. State-run hospitals offer free abortions, and the Communist Party has utilised forced abortion as a method of population control. U.S. officials align themselves with Chinese Communist Party officials who have gleefully criticised the U.S. Supreme Court by endorsing an extreme abortion viewpoint.

Dobbs doesn’t reflect poorly on America’s reputation in the world. Instead, it supports democratic self-governance, which the Biden foreign policy agenda claims to be a guiding concept for the free world.

To uphold national sovereignty and democracy in the face of criticism from the Chinese Communist Party or Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is to defend the decision.

Regardless of their opinions on abortion, America’s top diplomats should commend the high court for upholding the rule of law, democratic decision-making, and the value of debating difficult issues that include the most crucial issues of justice and human dignity.

Perhaps Dobbs can teach us something about the advantages of more effective geopolitical pluralism in the free world and stronger federalism at home. Learning those lessons would help our diplomats navigate these turbulent times.
