As the Number of Reported Cases of Monkeypox Increases, the United States Purchases Additional Vaccine and Increases the Frequency of Testing

As monkeypox continues to spread across the United States, the United States has placed an order for an additional 2.5 million doses of the Jynneos vaccine manufactured by Bavarian Nordic A/S.

These doses will be available in 2019, in response to the fact that there have been more than 1,400 cases of monkeypox reported across the country as of Friday.

As a result of the government’s decision to dramatically expand testing to include multiple commercial labs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky stated in a press teleconference that they anticipate more infections to be reported in the coming days.

She stated that the United States’ sample testing capacity has increased to 70,000 per week, up from 6,000 previously.

Walensky added that health experts are finding it aggravating that the demand for vaccines is significantly larger than the present supply that the government has available.

On Tuesday, a website in New York City that was being used to schedule appointments for vaccinations went down because of the high volume of people seeking to do so. The city already has 389 confirmed cases.

earlier this week, Republican Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina criticized the Biden administration’s response to the growing monkeypox outbreak in a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary Xavier Becerra.

Burr said in the letter that the United States has failed to learn from the “devastating effects” of other infectious diseases such as Covid-19 and Ebola. Burr is from North Carolina.

In June, during a hearing in the Senate, Burr stated that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was not taking the lead on monkeypox.

During the press call, Walensky made the following statement: “I want to emphasize that at the CDC we are making every effort to continue to give the most up-to-date information on this outbreak to affected communities and healthcare providers.”

“We continue to meet with partners every week so that we can learn about the issues they are facing from them.”

According to representatives from the Department of Health and Human Services, an additional 131,000 doses of Jynneos will be made available from the Strategic National Stockpile for states to place orders starting today, with deliveries anticipated to begin as soon as Monday.

The public health experts emphasized that, by their overall vaccination policy, those vaccinations will be distributed to locations that have the highest number of cases, while still taking into account the communities that are at the highest risk.

However, the CDC also stated that it has limited demographic data such as the age, race, and gender of people who have monkeypox.

The health department of New York City made the announcement on Friday that it will begin sharing demographic data every week to help raise awareness about the burden of disease and the equitable distribution of medications.

Already, the HHS reports that it has shipped 156,000 doses of Jynneos to the states that have requested it, with 100,000 of those shots having been delivered over the previous week.

The fresh order of Jynneos shots comes on top of an earlier order placed on July 1 for 2.5 million doses, which are scheduled to start arriving later on this year.

The United States has a stockpile of 1.7 million courses of Siga Technologies’ Tpoxx smallpox antiviral, which can also be used to treat monkeypox.

However, clinicians have remarked that it is difficult to prescribe because the approval process is so burdensome.

Tembexa, a medication developed by Chimerix for the treatment of smallpox, is also being considered for use by the CDC, even though it is associated with several severe adverse effects and has had very little research on people.
