Nonprofit Briefs: Free Stuff for a Large Number of Nonprofits

State and federal government entities provide non-profits with benefits for which they may seek. In support of the mission and purpose of non-profit organizations, foundations fund their operations through grants.

In addition, there are huge national nonprofits that provide both services and goods to other NGOs.

The National Association for the Exchange of Industrial Resources (NAEIR) is a 501(c)(3) organization that assists other 501(c)(3) charitable organizations.

Each year, NAEIR provides a booklet to the NonProfit Resource Center that describes its giving program.

The mission of NAEIR is to empower 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity organizations with acts of generosity. NAEIR accepts and stores surplus inventory given by manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers across the United States.

NAEIR redistributes this inventory to over 15,000 schools, churches, and other NGOs around the United States.

All products acquired from NAEIR must be utilized by the receiving organization and cannot be traded, sold, or bartered. Last year, NGOs with NAE membership had access to a stockpile of free items valued at $100 million.

How does it operate? As a result of overproduction, returns, and discounted items, manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers amass vast quantities of inventory in their warehouses.

They do not wish to dispose of unused, unsold products. They also do not intend to oversaturate the market with this product, as doing so would be detrimental to fresh sales.

As an incentive for donors who opt to mail items to NAEIR, the IRS offers tax incentives to donors who choose to ship merchandise.

Who may qualify? Churches, schools, and other nonprofits may apply for and receive free items. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) public charities sponsored by the public.

Typically, before products may be dispatched, a “Determination Letter” from the IRS is necessary.

NAEIR membership is available for a minimal annual charge of $59. Contacting NAEIR is the most effective approach to obtaining up-to-date membership information.
