To offset the devasting impact that inflation has had on state residents, California announced in June that it will issue $1,050 checks to around 23 million of its citizens.
The so-called inflation relief checks would probably not be sufficient on their own for low-income families, even if other U.S. states were to copy their example and issue their own.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the government’s program for providing food assistance, is one long-running initiative on which millions of Americans rely.
Approximately 13.8 million American families received SNAP payments, commonly known as food stamps, as of 2020.
The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 American Community Poll provided five-year estimates of the proportion of households that got SNAP benefits in the 12 months before the survey, which 24/7 Wall St. used to identify the ZIP codes in each state with the highest SNAP recipiency rate.
11.4 per cent of households in the US were receiving SNAP benefits as of 2020. Each state has at least one ZIP code where a greater proportion of households got nutrition assistance. This percentage ranges from 20.4 per cent to 71.5 per cent across the ZIP codes in each state with the highest SNAP recipient rate.
Income is the main determinant of SNAP eligibility, while other elements including assets and household composition also have an impact. In each state, the majority of ZIP codes that get SNAP benefits also have poverty rates that are in the top three in that state.
This means that around half of those ZIP codes share both characteristics. The SNAP recipient rate in ZIP code 06702 in downtown Waterbury, Connecticut, is 71.5 per cent, and the poverty rate is 63.5 per cent, making it the highest and sixth highest proportion in the nation. The majority of children living in poverty are found in these states.
Since income is the main factor in SNAP eligibility, the number of people receiving benefits is highly correlated with unemployment because unemployed employees are more likely to have little to no income.
The five-year unemployment rate in all but two of the ZIP codes with the highest SNAP recipient rates in each state is greater than the national average of 5.3 per cent.
The second-highest unemployment rate in the nation is found in ZIP 25034 in central West Virginia, where the five-year unemployment rate is 36.0 per cent. These states have experienced the worst increases in unemployment since the pandemic started.
