Days after Roe v. Wade was overturned, President Joe Biden reportedly made a deal with the Senate’s top Republican to appoint an anti-abortion attorney to a lifetime court position.
The Louisville Courier-Journal reported on Wednesday that Biden will propose Chad Meredith as a judge in Kentucky as part of an apparent plan to expedite the Senate’s consideration of his other federal appointments.
Biden is under pressure to defend abortion rights after the Supreme Court struck down federal protections for the practice on Friday. The rumoured agreement comes as a result.
Representative John Yarmuth, the only Democrat in the Kentucky congressional delegation, confirmed to the Courier-Journal that Meredith will be nominated for a federal judgeship.
According to Yarmuth and other sources, the nomination appears to be part of a pact with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky to not impede Biden’s future nominees to government positions.
There are currently no federal judge vacancies listed in Kentucky.
Yarmuth told the Courier-Journal, “given that there is no available judicial position on the Eastern District Court, it seems evident that this is part of a larger agreement between the president and Mitch McConnell over judicial nominees.”
“I am adamantly opposed to this agreement and Meredith’s nomination to the office. We have no need for another radical on the bench.”
In an apparent effort to speed up the Senate’s approval of his other federal appointments, Biden will reportedly submit Chad Meredith for appointment as a judge in Kentucky, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal on Wednesday.
Meredith is an unusual judicial nominee for a Democratic president due to his qualities.
He is classified as a Federalist Society member, a political club with conservative ideals.
Previously serving as Kentucky’s solicitor general under Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron, Meredith was hired as “of counsel” by the law firm Squire Patton Boggs in January.
After the Supreme Court on Friday invalidated federal protections for the procedure, Biden is under pressure to stand out for abortion rights. This leads to the alleged agreement.
Meredith will be nominated for a federal judgeship, Representative John Yarmuth, the sole Democrat in the Kentucky congressional delegation, said in an interview with the Courier-Journal.
Yarmuth and other sources claim that the nomination appears to be a concession made by Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell to Vice President Biden in exchange for him not blocking any of his future candidates for public office.

Meredith’s qualifications make him an uncommon judicial nominee for a Democratic president.
He is identified as a member of the Federalist Society, a legal organization with conservative views.
Meredith formerly worked as Kentucky’s solicitor general under Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron, and the law firm Squire Patton Boggs announced in January that it had engaged him as “of counsel.”
Before that, he served as the Republican governor of Kentucky’s top deputy general counsel.
Meredith stated, “This falls squarely within the scope of what governments are entitled to do to regulate medicine.” Several patients do not comprehend the nature of the fetus within them.
