During Governor Abbott’s Visit to Eagle Pass, Migrants Enter the United States

At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Governor Greg Abbott stated that Eagle Pass has become “ground zero” for the spike in migrant crossings.

“Eagle Pass is part of the Del Rio sector, and the Del Rio sector has seen the highest number of illegal border crossings over the past week,” Abbott said. No longer do the majority of unlawful crossings occur in the Rio Grande Valley.”

From here to Del Rio, where we have the most border crossings, we are currently at ground zero. In addition, there are indications that the number of border crossings in this region could increase significantly.

Monday, 2,915 undocumented immigrants were apprehended by the Del Rio Sector of the Border Patrol.

Minutes before Abbott’s scheduled Wednesday press conference under Eagle Pass’ International Bridge II, a group of unauthorized immigrants disobeyed Operation Lone Star and crossed the Rio Grande into the United States.

Federal and local agencies, such as the Eagle Pass Police Department, are overburdened by this circumstance.

“The police agencies will face significant challenges not only from illegal immigration, a shooter on the loose, and everything else that comes along with it.” Therefore, we’re being overextended,” Garza stated.

Garza is in charge of a group of roughly 40 active police officers. He and Sheriff Tom Schmerber of Maverick County met with the governor on Wednesday morning to discuss additional border security strategies.

“What we’re doing with the Department of Public Safety is putting together Strike Forces,” said Garza. They assist us in conducting nighttime operations, as well as in areas where our resources cannot go.

According to Abbott, every DPS Strike Force team consists of twenty soldiers.

Abbott stated, “(The objective) is to detect, discourage, and apprehend illegal border crossings by illegal immigrants.”

“They will be deployed without delay here in Eagle Pass… Additional Strike Teams will be deployed as necessary to high-traffic intersections.”

One hundred additional troopers are expected to assist with efforts in Maverick County.

Furthermore, Abbott pledged to establish new DPS-operated vehicle inspection checkpoints. The announcement was made days after a smuggling attempt in San Antonio claimed the lives of over 50 migrants.

“Joe Biden may not be stepping up to make sure it doesn’t happen again, but Texas will step up and do our part to try to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Abbott said.

“Our mission is to surprise drug cartels and smugglers, not to inform them in advance of our location.”

Wednesday there was confusion regarding the location and timing of the checkpoints.

Steven McCraw, the director of DPS, stated, “(The governor) discussed Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Strike Teams.”

“Our troopers have the authority to monitor commercial vehicle traffic. Along with civilian inspectors, they are trained and knowledgeable in this field… I can assure you that our troops will be able to determine whether or not it is permissible to act at that moment.”

Abbott stated, however, that assistance from the federal government is necessary, and he requested that President Joe Biden fully fund the Border Patrol.

Abbott stated, “Many of these deaths could have been avoided if Biden simply fully funded the Border Patrol operation of the United States of America and implemented the policies that the Border Patrol needs to do its real job.”

And their assigned paper processing work is not their actual job.
