During the Live Broadcast of the BET Awards, Janelle Monae Displayed the Middle Finger and Uttered “F— You, Supreme Court”

After the Supreme Court’s decision to overrule Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that legalized abortion statewide, on Friday, the BET Award artists were quick to criticize the court.

Janelle Monáe, the evening’s first presenter, raised her middle finger and yelled “F*** you, Supreme Court” from the platform of the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday during the live event. The swear word was censored during the broadcast, but her middle-finger motion was displayed.

” I’d like to send a shout out to Black women, Black queer artists, and Black nonbinary artists,” Monáe stated. These artists create art on their own terms, claiming their truths and expressing themselves freely and unashamedly in a culture that attempts to regulate and police our bodies, my body, and our choices, my choice.

She said, “F—- the Supreme Court. I am aware that we are celebrating ourselves right now, as we should – we especially deserve to do so now. We must celebrate our creativity by defending our rights and our truths.”

Following Lizzo’s performance of “About Damn Time,” host Taraji P. Henson addressed the Supreme Court’s decision during her opening remarks to the evening. Henson lauded Lizzo’s statement on Friday that she will donate $500,000 to Planned Parenthood, with Live Nation matching the donation.

Henson thanked Lizzo for her donation of one million dollars to Planned Parenthood. “You’re damn correct, and it’s about damn time. The time has come for us to assume our authority. It’s about time we brought up the reality that weapons have greater rights than women. Today is a sad day in America.

“A weapon that can take lives has more power than a woman who, if she so chooses, may give life,” the celebrity continued.

Jazmine Sullivan, the evening’s first winner for best R&B/pop artist, also addressed the topic throughout her performance, although she did not reference the Supreme Court or abortion specifically.

The singer stated, “As usual, I do this for the women, particularly my sisters.” “Right now is a difficult period for us, and I would like to speak directly to the men. We need y’all. Please rise to your feet. “Stand up for us and with us.”

If you have ever profited from a woman making one of the most difficult decisions of her life, which is to terminate a pregnancy, then you must stand with us. This is not a problem exclusive to women.

This is an issue that affects everyone, and we need your help more than ever, OK, guys? Y’all got us? Because you all are with us. Y’all got us?”

In her victory speech, Latto, the winner of the award for best new artist, stated, “It’s giving pro-choice. Never will I allow a guy to regulate my body.

The stars of BET’s Sistas addressed the Supreme Court verdict later in the evening. Novi Brown stated from the platform, “Not only are we sisters on-screen, but we are also sisters in real life.”

In light of the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade and the political events affecting our nation, it is time for sistas around the world to unite and raise their voices.
