After the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday to reverse Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that legalised abortion statewide, the stars at the BET Awards wasted no time in denouncing the court.
Janelle Monáe, the evening’s first presenter, raised her middle finger and yelled “F*** you, Supreme Court” from the platform of the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night during the live event.
The swear word was censored from the broadcast, but her middle-finger gesture was displayed.
Monáe stated, “I would like to send a shout-out to Black women, Black gay artists, and Black nonbinary artists.”
“These artists create art on their own terms, claiming their truths and expressing themselves freely and without apology in a culture that attempts to regulate and police our bodies, my body, and our decisions, my decision.”
She said, “F—k the Supreme Court. I am aware that we are celebrating ourselves right now, as we should — we especially deserve to celebrate right now. We must honour our art by guarding our rights and truths.”
Following Lizzo’s performance of “About Damn Time,” host Taraji P. Henson addressed the Supreme Court decision in her opening remarks for the evening. Henson lauded Lizzo’s statement on Friday that she will donate $500,000 to Planned Parenthood, with Live Nation matching the amount.
Henson remarked, “Thank you, Lizzo, for committing one million dollars to Planned Parenthood.”
“You’re absolutely right; it’s about damn time. It’s high time we stepped into our power. It is high time we discussed the fact that firearms have greater rights than women. A dark day has arrived in America.”
“A weapon that can take lives has more power than a woman who, if she chooses, may give life,” the celebrity elaborated.
Jazmine Sullivan, the evening’s first winner for best R&B/pop artist, also addressed the topic throughout her performance, although she did not name the Supreme Court or abortion specifically.
The singer stated, “As usual, I do this for the women, my sisters in particular.” “This is a difficult time for us, and I wish to talk directly to the men. We need y’all. We require you to stand up. “Stand with us and for us”
Sullivan said, “If you have ever benefited from a woman making one of the most difficult decisions of her life, terminating a pregnancy, then you must stand with us. This is not only a woman’s problem.
This is a problem that affects everyone, and we require your help more than ever, gentlemen. Y’all got us? Since we have you all. Y’all got us?”

As part of her acceptance speech, Latto, the recipient of the award for best new artist, stated, “It’s giving pro-choice. Never will I tolerate guy police my body.”
The stars of BET’s Sistas addressed the Supreme Court verdict later that evening. Novi Brown, a member of the cast, stated from the stage, “Not only are we sisters on-screen but also in real life.”
In light of the recent reversal of Roe v. Wade and the political events affecting our country, it is time for sistas across the globe to join hands and raise their voices.
