White House (Reuters) – On Thursday, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris met with a group of seven Democratic attorneys general to discuss the defence against a significant verdict that may severely restrict abortion rights in the nation.
The U.S. Supreme Court, which is dominated by conservatives, is anticipated to rule against Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed the right to an abortion, in the coming days. If this happens, roughly half of the country’s states could outlaw or severely restrict the procedure.
We will begin preliminary discussions on the state attorney’s general’s authority, Harris said. “They may be able to at least issue guidance to ensure that people in their state know their rights and that they have the power to assess and possibly challenge the constitutionality of laws that are being passed in their state.”
She stated that for those attorneys general who is in charge of criminal prosecution in their states, their conversation would be on how they can allocate resources for law enforcement in a way that ensures the security and welfare of individuals who will be impacted.
The White House meeting, which was originally reported by Reuters, provides a glimpse into the preparations being made before the publication of the verdict and in advance of the state-level abortion battles that are anticipated to take place.
Attorneys general from Wisconsin, Nevada, Illinois, California, Delaware, New York, and Washington state were present at the meeting.
State attorneys general have significant sway over laws in their jurisdictions, and Democratic attorneys general have vowed to uphold the law if Roe is overturned.
They will act as the Biden administration’s first line of defence in its battle to defend abortion rights at the state level, and they are anticipated to have an unprecedented effect on the future of abortion access.
Attorney General Bob Ferguson, for instance, has urged the medical licencing authorities in Washington state to publicly declare that they will not bar healthcare professionals from working there simply because they have provided abortions in places where it is now against the law.

Harris has embraced the subject head-on as the court nears making a final verdict on the case, anticipated in late June. She has been one of the Biden administration’s most vocal opponents of abortion rights, a subject that continues to be difficult for the president.
As a devout Catholic, Biden initially opposed Roe and has only recently come to support abortion rights. After the draught opinion was made public, he spoke out strongly, although, before that, he had never spoken as president while using the word “abortion.”

On Wednesday, Harris organised a discussion on the topic of abortion rights with a wide collection of stakeholders, including patients and healthcare professionals, reproductive rights activists, religious leaders, and constitutional and privacy experts.
When the verdict is handed down, Harris emphasised that “we must be prepared to stand as a united front.” Making it clear how Roe will affect privacy rights, in general, is part of what we will do as a coalition, according to the statement.
