The Onion’s Homepage Takeover Is a Vicious Parody of the Roe V. Wade Ruling by the Supreme Court

Following Friday’s historic decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, The Onion mercilessly mocked the U.S. Supreme Court’s reactionary stance.

Top eight stories from the satirical publication On Friday, the only content on the homepage was headlined, alluding to the court’s 5-4 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that had secured Americans’ constitutional right to abortions.

The main article on The Onion read, “Supreme Court Votes 5-4 To Throw Beer Bottle At Slut.”

The court reportedly voted 5-4 to “Lock Nation’s Toddlers In Hot Cars,” “Drive Slowly Alongside Woman Walking Home Alone At Night,” “Add Jesus Into All Paintings,” “Make It Illegal For Women To Deceive Men With Makeup,” “Baptize Constitution,” “Reclassify Women As Service Animals,” and “Reopen Japanese Internment Camps,” among other variations on that theme.

Lower on the page, The Onion proceeded to disparage the conservative-majority court with another title that read, “Supreme Court Rules 5-4 To Ride Stephen Breyer Around Like A Horse.” Along with Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Stephen G. Breyer, and Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., Justice Breyer was one of the four judges who voted against overturning Roe v. Wade.

Other vicious insults directed at the court read “Kavanaugh, Thomas Champion Creating Better Future For Next Generation Of Rapists,” “Woman’s Preventable Death During Childbirth Upheld In 6-3 Supreme Court Vote,” and “Nation Forced To Seek Human Rights From Back-Ally Supreme Court.”

Following the tragic tragedy that claimed the lives of 19 children and two adults at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, The Onion conducted a comparable front-page takeover last month.

The website published 21 articles on May 25 under the same headline, “‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens,” and with the same made-up statements, it has been used since 2014 for reports about mass shootings.

According to opinion research organisation Gallup, Americans’ trust in the Supreme Court had already fallen to a new 50-year low before the court’s decision invalidated Roe v. Wade.

In comparison to 36 per cent one year ago and five percentage points lower than the previous low recorded in 2014, only 25 per cent of American adults indicated they have “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in the Supreme Court.

A random sample of 1,015 American adults participated in the most current Gallup poll, which was conducted June 1–20.
