These days, The Witcher franchise is truly a valley of abundance. Between the anime prequel and the other spinoffs now in development, Andrzej Sapkowski’s universe appears to be expanding by the day.
But, of course, everyone’s attention is drawn to Henry Cavill’s flagship program, and not only because Geralt is attractive. The good news is that, even before season two was released, Netflix has already announced that season three is on the way.
The announcement was made during Netflix’s TUDUM event in September 2021, but now that some time has gone, there’s a lot more information about season three to offer. So saddle up with your trusty steed and as much cash as you can carry as we return to the Continent to discover what’s next in The Witcher season three.
When will the third season of The Witcher be released?
Season two of The Witcher came out almost exactly two years after the first, but it was mostly due to COVID-related delays, as well as Henry Cavill’s on-set injuries.
For the time being, TV productions appear to be moving at almost the same pace as they were before the epidemic, so assuming no further delays, season three should arrive by the end of 2022. or, most likely, the year 2023. That is, of course, subject to change.
Digital Spy revealed that the writers’ room is already working on material for season three when conversing with showrunner Lauren S Hissrich in the latter week of November 2021.
“This season’s writers’ room is outstanding. We’ve always had fantastic writers on the show, after all. However, I believe that this season in particular has… We had some new individuals come in, and it was fascinating to see how having this new blood changed the energy of the room: people who had seen the first season, then saw the second season, and came in with fresh, new thoughts, challenging me on topics I hadn’t really considered before.
“What’s unique is that we finalized the scripts first, and then we started talking to the actors and directors, and then we started talking about the production restrictions of making these eight episodes into a full-length adventure,” Lauren explained.
“It’s vital to me that the performers, for example, are invested in their characters’ journeys and that they are aware of their characters’ journeys. So they are the topics that will be discussed shortly.”
Who’s in the cast of The Witcher Season 3?
Season three will include Henry Cavill with our favorite characters that have helped make the program what it is. (After all, what is a show without Geralt, right?)
• Freya Allan as Cirilla AKA Ciri
• Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg
• Joey Batey as Jaskier
• Royce Pierreson as Istredd
• Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold
• Kim Bodnia as Vesemir
If you’ve seen Season 2 all the way to the conclusion, you’ll know that Ciri’s father, Emhyr, comes back from the grave. If the foreboding season two finale is any indication, actor Bart Edwards will play a key part in season three’s Big Bad.
Expect to see people from this fight, including mages, resurface when the relationship between Nilfgaard and the elves becomes more tight. As a result, Mimi Ndiweni (Fringilla), Media Simson (Francesa), Mahesh Jadu (Vilgefortz), and MyAnna Buring (Tissaia) are all likely to return for season three.
As production for Season 3 began, several new cast members were announced, including some recognized faces from other major series.
So far, the following items have been added to the list:
• Robbie Amell (The Flash) plays Gallatin, the leader of a guerilla Scoia’tael army battling for Nilfgaard.
Milva is a tough and brilliant human huntress adopted by the dryads of Brokilon Forest who also has excellent archery abilities and a strong survival instinct, played by Shang-Meng’er Chi’s Zhang.
• Hugh Skinner (Fleabag) as Prince Radovid, King Vizimir’s (Ed Birch) playboy brother. “With his good looks and intoxicated charm, Radovid marvels with how perceptive he can be in political issues, but it’s all games until someone gets wounded,” according to the press release.
• The Bloods’ Mistle is played by Christell Elwin, a member of the Rats, an adolescent misfit gang who is suspicious and out for vengeance – until a fortuitous encounter changes everything.
And who knows, maybe the program will finally incorporate some LGBT characters… Philippa Eilhart is one of the franchise’s most well-known LGBTQ+ characters, and following her cameo in season two, Cassie Clare can expect to see a lot more of her in season three.
Ciri’s sexuality was also discussed by Lauren S Hissrich in an interview with Digital Spy: “That’s something I’d say is hinted at in the novels with Ciri, but you never really get into what her sexuality is until we start to go into it further.
“All of this is on the horizon, and it’s exciting. I’m pleased you mentioned that because I believe one of the things we want to achieve with The Witcher is to illustrate that fantasy is for everyone and reflects everyone.”
Freya Allan, who plays Ciri, added: “I’ll have to wait till we get there to figure out how I’m going to deal with Ciri’s sexuality. In terms of the fact that she’s nearly becoming fairly boy-like, you can see flashes of her attempting to negotiate that throughout the season. […] But I don’t believe she’s really realized her sexuality just yet. It’s something she’ll find out about in season three or four, at the very least. We’ll have to wait and see.”
We believe the producers have put out casting calls for a character known as The Professor, aka Ralf Blunden, who is known to those familiar with the Witcher canon as essentially an assassin in specs with a large vocabulary, though he doesn’t always understand the words himself, thanks to Redandian Intelligence.
Inevitably, he’ll hunt down Yennefer and Ciri. (By the way, he’s not to be mistaken with the Professor from the original Witcher game, who was similar but not identical.) It’s important noting that none of this has been confirmed.
Safiyya Ingar has also been cast as pivotal Time of Contempt character Milva, according to Iranian Intelligence, but until we get an official announcement, we’ll take it with a grain of salt.
However, Bridgerton’s Adjoa Andoh, who portrays high priestess Nenneke, may be absent from the events. The actress has stated that she is unclear how much she will be participating in the forthcoming episodes.
When questioned about a prospective return, Andoh said, “Yeah, I don’t know.” “We’ll have to wait and see. The books are enormous. And the stories have taken so many different paths.

“Anneke appears frequently in the works. But it all depends on what they want to accomplish with this edition. We’ll have to wait and see what the show’s writers want to do with the material from the novels and how they intend to swing it.”
What will happen in season 3 of The Witcher?
“As kings, magicians, and monsters of the Continent seek to capture her,” the official description hinted, “Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, desperate to defend his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.”
“Yennefer, who has been entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, guides them to Aretuza’s walled citadel, where she expects to learn more about the girl’s latent abilities; instead, they find themselves in a battleground of political corruption, dark magic, and betrayal. They must fight back and risk losing each other forever unless they put everything on the line.”
Lauren S Hissrich, who should know, says, “Money aside: S3 is huge.” She also knows the budget, but she plainly does not want to disclose it, which is understandable.

Following the dramatic end of season two, the following few episodes will mostly focus on Ciri’s fate as a world-destroyer, or possibly a savior, if season four is ever to be revealed. Many forces are assembling to use the princess’s power for their own gain, including Ciri’s own (dead) father, but she now has Geralt and Yennefer at her side.

Season three will be focused on The Time of Contempt, the second book in the Witcher story, according to Hissrich, who spoke to TechRadar. Yennefer, Ciri, and Geralt travel to Aretuza in that book, where a coup occurs, causing the trio to split up once more. It’s important to understand that this pattern might alter, as it frequently does while going from page to screen.
Cavill said on Netflix’s Geeked channel after season two’s release that things will be quite different for Geralt and Yennefer after that massive betrayal:
“It’s a difficult combination of circumstances to recover from. It’s going to take a lot of effort to forgive this one. Geralt’s genuine growth this season has been his ability to know that he can’t do it alone.”
Anya Chalotra added her two cents, stating that Yennefer has a lot to learn in the future:
“Isn’t it routine: she’s cowled, and she’s lived the type of life she’s lived with all the rules she lives by, and that’s Yen, and she doesn’t trust anyone? She may have learned to think about things more […] and it will be really difficult for her to simply dive into a new way of being.”
We asked Joey Batey on The Witcher’s most recent publicity tour in November 2021 what he expects is in store for Jaskier after season two.
“It’s a difficult one,” he said. “I have complete faith in Lauren’s [Hissrich] vision. She’s revising literature from the 1980s and incorporating parts of our life that people want to see on television. They are no longer interested in seeing dragons. They want to see dragons, but they’re also curious about how xenophobia operates on this continent. What’s it like when there’s chaos and war?
“She’s fantastic at taking all of these contentious issues and presenting them through the prism of fantasy. That’s what I’m most excited for in season three: the continuance of that, as well as deeper investigation of the topics that matter to fans.”
Freya Allan, when asked the same question, provided us a more detailed response:
“I simply want to watch [Ciri] turn into a psychotic warrior. That is the most important thing. I can’t wait till she gets her hands on a real silver sword that isn’t a broomstick [laughs]. That’s something I’m looking forward to, and I’m sure Ciri is as well. As a result, we’ll all be enthusiastic at the same time.”
And, in an interview with Radio Times, Freya stated that she has already seen the scripts for Season 3: “It’s a thrilling prospect. It’s going to be a fantastic season, in my opinion.”
However, things may not go as planned for everyone. Showrunner Lauren S Hissrich promised that season three will have “a lot of action, some death… some death!” during a panel at the Lucca Comics & Games Festival in Italy. Is she talking about the death of a prominent figure or just some good ol’ monster slaying? We’ll have to wait and see, I guess…
In further dreadful news, Hissrich told Polygon what the elves’ greater presence implies for season three:
“In season two, viewers will see that we put a lot more emphasis on the elf plotline, which isn’t as significant in [the major novel being adapted], Blood of Elves. Nonetheless, I’m aware that the Scoia’tael, an army of elves fighting in favor of Nilfgaard, will be introduced in Season 3. And they don’t come over very well. It’s a really severe and grim plot.
“As a result, I want to make certain that we fully comprehended and humanized their role in the conflict. What are their origins? What is it that they are fighting for? Even if they are lost in the process. What kind of setting do they have? As a result, we’re always looking at the Witcher as a whole.”
But don’t expect everything to be set in stone. While the authors have a strategy in place, Hissrich informed fans that she will be listening to the feedback from season two and maybe modifying things in the future.

Lauren revealed this in a tweet on December 21, in which she stated:
“It’s the 21st of December. The show premiered four days ago, and after spending 2.5 years working on it, I’m interested to hear what viewers have to say (not just critics). That’s putting it mildly. I’m not going to be able to stay away, “she sent out a tweet
She also hinted that fans would learn more about Eskel’s death and Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri’s connection as the season progresses.

“I’d like to reassure them that I hear them and that they aren’t shouting into the vacuum. But I don’t have time — or shouldn’t — to engage in a lengthy discussion on why Eskel died or when G/Y/C will bond. (Spoiler alert: S3)”
Producer Steven Gaub has begun posting set photos from season three on Instagram, albeit they don’t disclose any big new locations or situations:

In terms of the show’s format, each season of The Witcher has taken a somewhat different approach to structure, so expect that to continue in season three, which will feature a compressed chronology.
“The tales that we want to convey actually shape our seasons as a whole,” Hissrich added (via The Wrap). “As a result, the structure is an excellent illustration. There was no motivation to do non-linear tales in season two. So we chose a pretty linear approach, which enabled us to experiment with some other features of visions or flashbacks that we wouldn’t have been able to accomplish if we were working with timeframes. Season three, in my opinion, is fantastic.”
“It’s based on The Time of Contempt, which is a novel that I find to be highly flexible. There’s a lot of action, and there are a lot of things that will leave you speechless when you come to them. As a result, we’re letting it drive our tale. Season three, for example, takes place over a fairly short period. It doesn’t take long since it doesn’t have to.”
When it comes to when the show will conclude, don’t anticipate it to last much longer than the published novels. Thankfully, Andrzej Sapkowski’s major series is a little more productive than George RR Martin’s (sorry George).
“I’ve always maintained that I’d want to conclude our stories as Andrzej Sapkowski ended his,” Hissrich added. “I just don’t think there’s any need for us to keep making stories after he’s gone. The strange thing is, he’s actually released two new novels since we’ve been working on the series. We’re attempting to be a little more adaptable.
“I’ve always stated that as long as there’s interest in the program, I’ll write it. Right now, there appears to be a lot of interest. However, some of that is due to the additional universe that we are expanding. So the anime films, or the spinoff that just wrapped production, are means for us to continue presenting Sapkowski’s stories without diverting attention away from the mothership’s primary storyline.”
How many episodes will there be in the third season of The Witcher?
Netflix hasn’t said how long The Witcher season three will be, but if the prior two seasons are any indication, the third season will be eight episodes long as well. Given the expanding expanse of the Witcherverse, we wouldn’t be shocked if season three’s length is extended to 10 episodes, which may mean even more witchy goodies for us!

Netflix announced that in the first three days after the premiere of season two, fans recorded a total of 142.4 million viewing hours. The Witcher season one was The Witcher’s closest competition within that period, with 49.1 million hours viewed between December 13 and 19. Netflix would clearly not be squandering their money if they were to add two or three additional episodes to season three.
