Former President Donald Trump’s effect on the Republican Party, as well as the way Americans think about voting and elections, was put to the test Tuesday in races ranging from Maine and South Carolina to Nevada and North Dakota.
And races across the country hinted at what might happen in November’s general elections, the most notable of which was the Nevada Republican Senate primary, which selected who will challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto.
She is seen as one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the upcoming election, which could determine who controls the upper chamber and, with it, the destiny of Vice President Joe Biden’s remaining term.
There’s also a special election in South Texas that could serve as a warning to Democrats and their razor-thin congressional majority, as well as jousts pitting Trump supporters against Trump opponents, highlighting how much of the primary season is about the GOP’s future and the former president’s role.

Nevada’s Senate election was likely the most high-profile fight on Tuesday, given the impact, it may have on the United States Senate.
The victory of former state attorney general Adam Laxalt in the Republican primary sets up one of the most important elections of the year in 2022. Democrats can’t afford to lose a single seat in the Senate, where they have a 50-50 split.
Laxalt is a popular candidate among Republicans. Trump and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (who have been at odds since 2020) are among his supporters.
This year, the Silver State is one of four Senate races ranked as a toss-up by political analysts, with three of those seats controlled by Democrats.

Due to skyrocketing inflation and President Joe Biden’s unpopularity, Cortez Masto was going to have an uphill struggle regardless of who won the GOP nominee.
In an April poll conducted by Suffolk University, 72 per cent of Nevada voters felt the state’s economy as fair or poor.
When asked about the president’s performance, 59 per cent disapprove, with almost half of voters (47 per cent) stating their vote this fall will be about changing Biden’s leadership style.

Trump’s bogus allegations that the 2020 presidential election was rigged continue to haunt the country, particularly in down-ballot contests.
According to the New York Times and the Washington Post, Jim Marchant won the Republican Secretary of State primary in Nevada over six other candidates.
Marchant is one of several individuals running for chief election officer in battleground states who claim — incorrectly — that fraud had a factor in Biden’s victory.
Currently, Republican Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske has defended President Joe Biden’s victory in the state, claiming that there was no proof of significant voter fraud in the 2020 election.
Despite this, Marchant has continued to promote conspiracy theories about the election’s outcome, telling a February crowd that their vote “hasn’t counted for decades.”

In South Carolina, Trump has a perfect record.
The GOP primary in South Carolina put Trump’s clout to the test, pitting him against two House incumbents who resisted the previous president.
After denouncing Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 uprising, Republican Reps. Nancy Mace and Tom Rice both faced primary challenges.
Mace also drew the wrath of the former president by voting to certify President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. She attempted to make amends by filming a campaign ad outside Trump Tower this year, claiming to be one of his “earliest supporters” in 2016.
Early results showed Mace winning Katie Arrington, a former state representative, with more than the 50% needed to avoid a runoff.
Rice was one of ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump following his inauguration on January 6. Rice, on the other hand, chose a different strategy, refusing to apologise for voting against Trump, even though he knew it would lose him re-election.

This election drew a swarm of six Republican rivals to Rice in South Carolina’s 7th congressional district, which Trump carried by around 18% in both of his presidential campaigns.
Rice, on the other hand, was hammered across the eastern South Carolina district by state Rep. Russell Fry. When the race was called Tuesday evening, he garnered less than 25% of the vote, compared to Fry, who received little more than 51%.

Texas sends a message to Democrats.
When Texas Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela abruptly resigned in March to join a lobbying business, it sparked a special election frenzy among political insiders.
National Republicans poured money into the mainly Hispanic district, which will no longer exist next year due to redistricting, seeing it as a way to bolster their support among minority voters in South Texas and improve their chances in the November elections.
The wager paid off, as Republican candidate Mayra Flores defeated Democrat Dan Sanchez in the election.

Flores has already been nominated as the Republican candidate in the newly created district, where she will fight Democratic incumbent Vicente Gonzalez in November.
