The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), originally known as the Food Stamp Program, is a federal financial assistance programme in the United States that assists people who are qualified in purchasing food.
Unless they earn an exemption and complete all other eligibility conditions, most students enrolled in more than half-time higher education are usually not eligible.
If a student is enrolled full-time or more than half-time and is under the age of 18 or 50, has a physical or mental disability, works at least 20 hours a week in paid employment, and participates in a state or federally funded work-study programme, they may still be eligible for SNAP benefits.
It also applies to those who take part in an on-the-job training programme, care for a kid under the age of six, are single parents enrolled full-time in college and caring for a child under the age of twelve, and get Temporary Aid for Needy Families assistance.
If they are engaged in a TANF Job Opportunities and Basic Skills (JOBS) programme, they may also be eligible for SNAP assistance for college students.
College Students’ SNAP Benefits
According to College Snap Project, there are further income limitations that should be considered based on family size and 130 per cent of the Federal Poverty Line (FPL).
FPL determines who is eligible for a variety of federal and state government programmes.
In Texas, students may be eligible for SNAP benefits if they are assigned to or self-placed in a college or other higher education institution through a SNAP employment and training programme.
Those enrolled in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 or the Trade Adjustment Assistance Program established under Section 236 of the 1974 Trade Act are also eligible.
EBT Card
Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that allows SNAP recipients to use their benefits to purchase groceries.
When participants buy at a SNAP-authorised retail store, their SNAP EBT account is debited to reimburse the retailer for food purchased.
EBT is used in all 50 states, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service.
Since June of 2004, EBT has been the only way to get SNAP benefits in all 50 states. The Pandemic-EBT programme is part of the US government’s pandemic response.
