Fox News’ choice not to carry Thursday evening’s hearing on the U.S. Capitol riot outraged him, but he wasn’t surprised, given that the conservative network was a “major suspect” in the incident.
“It’d be like if Court TV’s coverage of the O.J. [Simpson] trial had been hosted by O.J.,” the “Late Night” host joked on Thursday night’s show, which was filmed ahead of the House Select Committee’s live hearing on the Jan. 6, 2021, attack.
The hearings were not broadcast on any major network except Fox News. Instead, anchors Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity continued with their regular programming, with no commercial breaks for the entirety of the hearing, disparaging and misrepresenting the results.
“Fox was an active participant in spreading the big lie that led to the attempted coup and has since helped whitewash and cover up what happened,” Meyers said, noting that on the day of the riot, the Jan. 6 committee had already revealed private texts from Fox News hosts Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, and Brian Kilmeade to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.
Former President Donald Trump was encouraged by all three to put an end to his backers.
“Imagine if the committee saw those text messages and then Fox switched back to Hannity or Ingraham,” Meyers suggested. “It’d be like that ‘Planet Earth’ clip where the snakes pursue the iguana and then cut to a snake interview at the end.”
The Late Night host cracked a joke on Thursday’s broadcast, which was taped ahead of a live hearing on the attack by the House Select Committee.
Except for Fox News, none of the mainstream networks aired the proceedings. For the duration of the hearing, anchors Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity continued their regular programming, with no commercial breaks, criticising and misrepresenting the outcomes.
“Fox was an active player in spreading the great falsehood that led to the attempted coup and has since helped whitewash and cover up what happened,” Meyers stated, stressing that on the day of the riot, Fox was an active partner in spreading the big lie that led to the attempted coup.
The 6 committees previously uncovered private texts from Fox News personalities Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, and Brian Kilmeade to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.
