“The next stage in a continuing offensive against the fundamental liberties of Americans,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said of the Louisiana Legislature’s approval of criminal penalties for abortion providers.
On Monday, the Biden Administration weighed in on a bill passed by the Louisiana Legislature last week that would toughen the penalties for abortion providers.
It would go into force once the US Supreme Court, as expected, overturns the Roe v. Wade decision, which legalises abortion.
In a statement, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “The Louisiana Legislature has taken the latest step in a rising offensive upon Americans’ fundamental freedoms.”
Senate Bill 342, sponsored by Sen. Katrina Jackson, D-Monroe, received final approval Thursday in the Louisiana House of Representatives.
Abortion providers can face prison sentences of one to five years and fines of $5,000 to $50,000 under current law. The penalties under Jackson’s bill range from one to ten years in prison and fines ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.
At a press conference on Thursday, Democrat Gov. John Bel Edwards stated that he supports exceptions for rape and incest.
He hasn’t said whether he’ll veto Jackson’s bill, despite previously supporting bills that didn’t include the exceptions.
“Vetoing the bill would not achieve what I would like, which is rape and incest exceptions,” Edwards said.
“A human being from the moment of fertilisation and implantation,” according to Louisiana’s criminal code. This definition could lead to charges being brought against anyone who terminates a pregnancy, not just abortion providers.
