The Diamondbacks defeated the Dodgers 5-3 on Tuesday night. But the Dodgers lost.
The Dodgers blew a three-run lead in the first inning and lost their first lead of the season.
They hit into five double plays, went 2 for 8 with runners in scoring position, and were caught stealing once.
Errors by Gavin Lux and Tony Gonsolin contributed to three Arizona runs in the third inning.
The deciding blow came from a Dodgers error. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Dodgers reliever Brusdar Graterol tried to deliver a low slider to David Peralta. But the pitch stayed up and Peralta smashed a 433-foot home run.
“It’s the first time in a long time,” manager Dave Roberts remarked. “It should’ve been a different game.”
Like Monday, the Dodgers took an early lead Tuesday night.
In the top of the first, Freddie Freeman and Trea Turner walked, and Max Muncy singled.
With two outs, Will Smith came to bat. On a 2-and-1 count, the catcher doubled to score all three runners.
After that, the Dodgers (12-5) had a string of bad luck.
A Freeman double-play grounder finished the second inning. Turner was caught trying to steal second base in the third.
Gonsolin’s excellent start to the night came to an end in the bottom frame. Geraldo Perdomo singled and he walked Jose Herrera on four pitches. His next wild pitch advanced both runners.
After that, Gonsolin got Daulton Varsho to ground out. But, as Perdomo scored, Lux threw to first, bouncing past a diving Freeman and into the dugout.
The Diamondbacks (7-11) knotted the game on Pavin Smith’s RBI single up the middle.
Lux stated he had a bad grip on the ball and wished he had shuffled it before throwing it.
“Pity Tony,” Lux said. “He cruised.”
So did the Dodgers. A Cody Bellinger double-play grounder erased Smith’s leadoff walk in the fourth.
Turner singled to start the sixth, but rolled into a double play at second.
The worst miscalculation was in 7.
Mookie Betts hit a line drive to justify after Chris Taylor and Hanser Alberto singles. Taylor was sprinting from second base on contact, expecting a hit. But Peralta had already made the catch in the gap and doubled him off with a throw to second.
Taylor said it was a horrible read. “I assumed he struck it off the end of the bat and it would drop. I tried to score a good leap. But he caught it. No way.”
In the ninth, Smith came to the plate with the bases loaded. He hit a grounder to third base, triggering the fifth double play of the night, minutes before Peralta blasted the game-winning bomb.
