The game in Milwaukee on Monday night served as yet another reminder of how critical small roster changes can be in the long run.
Luis Gonzalez, who was claimed off waivers in August, hit the game-winning two-run homer in the ninth inning, startling the Brewers and capping a successful road trip for the Giants.
Infielder Kevin Padlo was acquired from the Seattle Mariners for monetary considerations just before first pitch on Tuesday. Padlo checks off a lot of the same boxes that other recent additions have.
The 25-year-old is a former high-round pick, having been selected by the Colorado Rockies in the fifth round in 2014.
In the minors, he boasts a high on-base percentage (.350 in eight seasons) and has hit for more power than most of the Giants’ recent arrivals. Padlo hit 20 home runs in 95 Triple-A games for the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners last season. In 2019, he hit 21 home runs on two tiers.
Padlo has mostly played third base, but he has some minor-league and major-league experience at first base.
He has appeared in ten major league games and is 1-for-15 with two walks and a double.
Padlo was traded to the Rays in a deal that sent Jake McGee and German Marquez to Colorado two years after he was drafted by the Rockies.
