The Maryland Department of Human Services has started a new program to assist low-income households with their water bills.
The Low Income Household Water Assistance Program can provide up to $2,000 assistance to families whose water bills are 30 days or more past due.
“No family or child should go without water because of financial difficulties,” stated Lourdes Padilla, Secretary of the Department of Human Services.
“Maryland is expanding access to more inexpensive water for low-income households with the debut of the new water assistance program.”
According to the MDHS, applications for the program will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and continue until all federal monies are depleted.
Applicants must meet particular requirements to be considered for the program.
Grant funds may be available to help with the amount of the household’s water or wastewater services that have been discontinued owing to unpaid water bills.
Fees may be charged to assist with the reconnection of residential water services.
If a household’s water or wastewater services have been terminated owing to an unpaid balance, money may be available to pay all or part of the bill.

Alternatively, suppose the household has difficulty paying their present water bills and other expenses. In that case, they may be eligible for temporary assistance to pay some or all of their water bills.
