Winning the Sky Bet Championship with Fulham this season would be “a dream” for Tom Cairney, who has supported the west London club to prosper in the Premier League if they can get through the first season.
Following a 3-0 win against Preston on Tuesday, Marco Silva steered the Cottagers back into the Premier League at the first time of asking, and with four games to spare.
Before the players returned to the field with banners proclaiming their promotion, the fans flocked to the Craven Cottage pitch to celebrate.
And Cairney, who paid for the rest of the night, said it was an unforgettable experience.
“It was nice to have a reason to rejoice.” It was nice to rejoice together,” he told the PA news agency. “I mean, if you don’t appreciate those once in a blue moon moments, there’s no point performing this work,” he said.
Fulham has been promoted three times since Cairney arrived for the club for a reported £3 million in 2015, but the first two were through the play-offs, and the 31-year-old insisted this time was different.
“It does, I think it does feel different,” she says. It appears to be less chaotic, whereas the play-offs are complete pandemonium,” the midfielder explained.
“However, I believe the club, the staff, and everyone else now has a long time to plan for next season, now that they know where they’ll be, and that should help us.”
Fulham has failed to win the Championship, despite having a nine-point lead and a big goal difference over second-placed Bournemouth ahead of their clash on Saturday.
The silverware would mean a lot to Cairney, who has yet to win a major championship.
“There aren’t many people that win a league in their career,” he remarked. It’d be a dream because there are so many footballers in the world and so few who get promoted.”
“When I initially joined, we didn’t have a successful campaign,” he stated when questioned about the club’s chances of staying in the top division next season. We’d just escaped relegation, but I believe we were a very strong Championship club after that, and we’ve subsequently played some fantastic football.

“However, we’ve only managed to remain up for one season since then.” However, I believe that if this club can stay up for one season, they will be there for a long time. It’s only for one season, so maybe next year.”
