On Thursday, the Raiders’ fan base got some bad news. Daryle Lamonica, a former NFL quarterback, has died, according to reports. He was 80 years old at the time.
Lamonica was born in Clovis, California. At Clovis High School, he was an All-State quarterback, and he went on to play collegiate football at Notre Dame.
The Buffalo Bills selected him in the 24th round of the 1963 American Football League Draft.
Before joining the Raiders in 1967, he spent four years in Buffalo, largely on the bench.
Lamonica became a sensation in Oakland, earning the nickname “Mad Bomber” for his powerful arm and ability to extend the field vertically.
The big-armed quarterback passed for 3,302 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions in 1969.
He also won four consecutive Western Division championships and one AFL Championship with the Raiders.
He was a three-time All-Star and two-time AFL MVP.
