De’Vondre Campbell of the Green Bay Packers thought his new deal a dream come true, but it wasn’t cause for celebration.
He’s too preoccupied with proving that his best days are still to come. Campbell says he’s heard the criticism that he won’t be able to capitalise on his breakout season last year.
“A lot of people believed it was a fluke,” Campbell said Wednesday in his first interview with Green Bay reporters since signing his new contract.
“You’re familiar with how that works. I’m just trying to improve every day, to keep moving forward, and to attempt to repeat.”
Campbell signed a five-year, $50 million contract with the company.
His comeback should provide the Packers a major lift, since they may have to rely more on their defence without All-Pro receiver Davante Adams.
Preston Smith, an outside linebacker, remarked, “I’m delighted to have Dre back.” “Having him on defence makes a lot of guys feel better, including the coaching staff and organisation.
Knowing we’ve got this guy in the middle who can make plays for us, get men lined up, and play at a high level each and every week is a significant thing.”
Campbell said on Wednesday that he felt at home in Green Bay from the moment he came, and he praised the Packers’ president/CEO Mark Murphy, general manager Brian Gutekunst, and vice president/director of football operations Russ Ball for their support.
That encouraged him to remain with the Packers.
Campbell said, “I’ve always felt like I’ve done all the right things for the wrong people.” “In order to locate people that appreciate you, you’ll have to break down a wall for them.”
As I previously stated, the Packers’ commitment to me is mutual. It’s reciprocal.”
Campbell said he was more productive in Green Bay because he was able to focus on his duties as a “MIKE” linebacker rather than having to play numerous positions.
On his prior teams, Campbell said he had to switch between “MIKE” linebacker, strong-side linebacker, and weak-side linebacker.
Campbell stated before joining the Packers last year that he just wanted to play “MIKE” linebacker. Campbell has known Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur since his rookie season, so he believed the Packers’ claims.
“I was playing so many different positions that people said, ‘We have no idea what he’s excellent at since he’s doing this, this, and this.’ Yes, he’s good at it, but we haven’t seen him consistently accomplish anything,’ Campbell added.
“That’s what I was hearing,” says the narrator. So I wanted to put an end to that rumour. ‘He’s only an average player,’ says the coach. No, I know I’m fantastic, and I’ve always believed it.
“However, as I previously stated, opportunity is everything, and I’ve never had the chance to regularly demonstrate it.” Everyone is witnessing it on a national platform now that I’m here and able to do it.”
Along with that potential, he now gets a larger contract.
Despite the fact that Campbell claims he hasn’t celebrated his new contract, he described it as a “dream come true” for him and his family.
“That’s what it’s all about,” Campbell said, “when you eventually attain that ultimate objective of being able to put your kids up for life so they don’t have to grow up and do some of the things I had to do to get by.”
