The New York Mets swept Tuesday’s doubleheader against the tough San Francisco Giants, winning Game 1 5-4 and Game 2 3-1, thanks in large part to pitchers Tylor Megill and Max Scherzer.
In the first game, Megill overcame a shaky start to pitch six good innings (allowing only four earned runs) to give the Mets a chance to win.
Scherzer, who is still an ace at 37, put on an absolutely strong performance in the nightcap. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but only gave up one run in seven innings of work, striking out ten batters.
“It just goes to show you that we’re a terrific ballclub,” Scherzer told MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. With a 9-3 record, the squad now has the best record in the Majors. “We have the ability to compete with the best.”
In the first 12 games, the Mets have been outstanding.
Shortstop Francisco Lindor, who was widely chastised for his poor start with the Queens in 2021, blasted the game-winning home run in the bottom of the tenth inning in Game 1.
“To be honest, I don’t remember what we did last year,” Lindor admitted. “However, it does feel good to win this year.”
Lindor suffered a lot last year, but he was fantastic in the spring this year, and his success has carried over to the start of the season. He is currently hitting .310/.442/.619 with a 208 WRC+, three home runs, and three stolen bases after yesterday’s doubleheader.
Megill has a 2.20 ERA, while Scherzer has a 2.50. Other members of the staff have also been outstanding: Carlos Carrasco has returned to his dominant form (0.84 ERA), and Chris Bassitt, who was acquired through trade from the Oakland Athletics, has been even better.
