The New York Yankees met the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday afternoon, coming off a poor series against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Bombers needed a win after dropping two of three games to Baltimore, which they achieved despite Gerrit Cole providing his best Wild Card impression.
The Yankees narrowly beat the Tigers courtesy to a disastrous first inning by the Tigers, which included a two-run home run on a pop fly between the catcher and pitcher that dropped to the ground.
After Cole was taken out of the game in just 1.2 innings, the Yankees’ bullpen immediately impressed.
Following an excellent first inning in which he struck out numerous batters, Cole proceeded to walk three batters in a row, for a total of five. He drove in a run with a walk, then a pop fly from Joey Gallo in justify field drove in another.
The bullpen, on the other hand, was outstanding, with Clarke Schmidt pitching 3.1 innings and striking out six batters while only allowing two hits.
The bullpen allowed only one hit over the final four innings, striking out two batters in the process.
For a Yankees team that has struggled offensively this season, having relief pitchers who can compensate poor starting pitching is a significant plus.
Individual batters did admirably, particularly Aaron Hicks, who had one hit and two walks. In three at-bats, Isiah Kiner-Falefa had two hits and a walk.
Anthony Rizzo drew three walks on the afternoon, assisting the Yankees in getting on the board early in the game following Detroit’s first-inning error.
The Yankees have earned eight walks in all, which is an incredible figure. They did strike out 13 times, but that is a topic for another conversation.
From Gerrit Cole to Joey Gallo, who struggled in the batter’s box and threw a dreadful throw from justify field to a tagging runner at third base, the bad news is many.
As previously said, Cole was tormented in the second inning, surrendering multiple walks and two runs. Aaron Boone opted to switch to Clarke Schmidt after he threw only 68 photos.
The Yankees’ bullpen will be worn out by the All-Star break if they continue to rely on it at this rate, so general manager Brian Cashman may want to consider adding some starting pitching.
Otherwise, the current roster members must step up and survive a little longer, allowing the bullpen to rest.
Gallo, who had four strikeouts on the day and lowered his average to.121, struggled in the outfield as well. Cole had to cut off his awful throw, effectively ending his day.
There’s a case to be made that Gallo is simply unfortunate when it comes to solid contact resulting in outs.
