At the Allianz Arena, Samuel Chukwueze scored a dramatic 88th-minute equalizer to propel Villarreal into the Champions League semi-finals at the expense of Bayern Munich.
Chukwueze slammed home a Gerard Moreno cross four minutes after coming on as a substitute to cancel out Robert Lewandowski’s 52nd-minute opener and send the La Liga side through on a 2-1 aggregate result.
Villarreal had resisted Bayern’s assault in the second half, with Lucas Hernández and Thomas Müller among those with chances to win it before the visitors sealed the deal with extra-time looming.
For much of the first half, the hosts were sluggish, and it took until just before half-time for Jamal Musiala to get a shot on target, which he directed straight at Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
Villarreal was coping well with Bayern’s one-dimensional approach and appeared to be gaining confidence in their ability to hold on to the hard-fought one-goal lead they had established in the first leg.
When Lewandowski was punished for a foul on Raul Albiol in the 33rd minute, his frustrations got the better of him, and Arnaut Danjuma and Moreno both came close for the visitors.
After the break, Bayern finally found their stride, and Dayot Upamecano should have scored after a superb cut-back by the harried Leroy Sané in the 51st minute.
Moments later, Lewandowski put Bayern ahead for the first time in the game, igniting a barrage of pressure that saw Hernández shoot straight at Rulli and Müller waste a great chance with a close-range header from another Sané cross.

Moreno had issued a warning by flashing the ball across the face of the Bayern box in a quick counter-attack in the midst of the chances, and the danger became a reality four minutes after Chukwueze’s arrival.
The Nigerian kept his calm to head another Moreno cross beyond Manuel Neuer, and the “Yellow Submarine” held on for a famous aggregate victory and a spot in the last four.
