On Tuesday, in Virginia, Johnny Depp’s lawyers accused his ex-wife, Amber Heard, of faking domestic abuse charges against him to enhance her own career. For her op-ed in the Washington Post in 2018, Heard has sued Depp for $50 million, alleging she destroyed his career.
In their opening statement, Heard’s lawyers argued that her charges are true and that she has a First Amendment right to express herself. Her lawyer, Ben Rottenborn, said Depp is aiming to damage Heard’s life.
A “revenge-obsessed ex-husband,” Rottenborn argues, Depp has been out to humiliate Amber, haunt her, and ruin her career for years. Onze jurors must sort through a mound of documented evidence and contradicting testimony to decide who is telling the truth.
The Washington Post article, which helped Heard represent herself as a sympathetic champion, was published just before the premiere of “Aquaman,” in which she starred. “She posed as the #MeToo movement’s face — the saintly representative of innocent women who has actually suffered abuse,” Vasquez said. That’s a lie, the proof shows it.
Heard has accused Depp of multiple assaults, including grabbing her by the throat, hurling her against a wall, kicking, choking, and punching her. In her opening statement, Elaine Bredehoft detailed many of the charges, including one in which Depp allegedly sexually attacked her with a liquor bottle.
The trial will describe drug abuse, violence, and smashed apartments. In his opening statement, Rottenborn advised jurors to focus on her op-ed, which does not mention Depp. “It’s not about Johnny Depp,” he protested. “The article is about her social change.”
Rottenborn contended that Depp’s career was tanking while Heard’s was booming at the time of publication. He said her op-ed was an attempt to leave an abusive relationship. But by suing her, Depp is keeping her stuck.
“This case isn’t about their daily lives,” Rottenborn added. “It’s not about preference. It’s not about mudslinging… The lawsuit is ultimately about the First Amendment.” Heard countersued Depp for $100 million, claiming his lawyer defamed her by accusing her of manufacturing a fake.
Accusations of domestic violence have harmed Depp’s career, according to Chew, since Hollywood companies do not want to risk hiring someone accused of domestic abuse.
