A headline claiming that Americans will get $1,657 checks is untrue. It’s actually payouts from Social Security for retired or disabled workers.
Some people are confused about whether Americans will receive another batch of direct payments after seeing a headline in The United States Sun newspaper.
“Americans to receive cheques for $1,657 in just FOUR days – and your birthdate will determine when you get the cash,” the headline reads. Some social media users speculate about this, and Google Trends data shows that many are questioning if everyone will get the $1,657 cheques.
THE QUESTION
Are all Americans receiving checks worth $1,657?

- U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Social Security

What We Found
The $1,657 payments are solely for Social Security recipients and are not available to the general public. Later in the report, the Sun newspaper mentions this, but not in the deceptive title. The checks themselves aren’t brand new; recipients are just receiving a cost-of-living adjustment to their monthly benefits payments.
When people retire or are unable to work due to a disability, Social Security provides them with a source of income. Retirees can begin receiving Social Security benefits as early as 62.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that, due to rising costs of living, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for nearly 70 million Americans will increase by 5.9% in 2022. Most Social Security recipients received a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in January 2022, and the average payout for all retired employees is currently $1,657.
Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Social Security, said in a press release that the annual COLA is tied to the increase in the Consumer Price Index, the most widely used measure of inflation determined by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.
According to the news release, “the COLA protects benefits from losing purchasing power over time as the cost of rent, food, and other expenses rises.” “Medicare premiums, withheld from most beneficiaries’ Social Security checks, often absorb a large portion of the COLA rise.”
The SSA’s fact sheet also mentions the $1,657 figure in The Sun’s headline.
According to the Social Security Administration, all retired workers would get an average monthly Social Security benefit of $1,657 after the 5.9% rise, up from $1,565 previously. The average expected monthly payment for a couple receiving benefits increased from $2,599 to $2,753.
In its title, The Sun also states that a person’s birthdate decides when to receive their pay. That’s also nothing new.
According to AARP, a timetable in effect since 1997 determines when Social Security claimants will get their benefits payments based on their birthday. Previously, all charges were sent out on the third day of the month, but this became impossible as the number of recipients expanded.
The payment schedule for Social Security benefits is as follows:
- Birthdays from January 1 to October 10 are paid on the second Wednesday of each month.
- Those born on the 11th through the 20th of the month are paid on the third Wednesday of the month.
- Birthdays from the 21st to the 31st of the month are paid on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
These payments have nothing to do with stimulus payments. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the federal government sent three waves of stimulus funds totaling between $600 and $1,400.

At this time, a fourth stimulus check for all Americans is not in the works. The website of the Internal Revenue Service only has information about the first three stimulus checks, with no indication that a fourth check will be sent by the federal government. In addition, no legislation for a fourth stimulus check has been authorized by Congress.
