Roman Quinn to Phillies Minor League Deal!

Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports that the Philadelphia Phillies will sign Roman Quinn to a minor league contract.

While with the Phillies for a decade, Quinn was one of their first-round selection picks in 2011. For seven years in a row, from 2012 to 2018, he cracked Baseball America’s list of the Phillies’ top prospects. He has long been considered an important prospect.Roman Quinn

Injuries prohibited him from playing enough to exhaust his prospect status, which is part of the reason he was on those lists for so long. His career total 178 games and never more than 50 games in any single season despite appearances in five MLB seasons.

Just 28-years-old and due to turn 29 in May, Quinn is still widely respected for his speed and defense. His bat has been the source of his problems thus far, in addition to his injuries. He has a lifetime batting average of.228/.306/.355 with a 78 wRC+, but he has 39 stolen bases in that time.

When he had surgery on his left Achilles in June of last year, he was forced to miss the rest of the season. For the first time in his career, Quinn was eligible for arbitration in November after completing three years of service time last year. Despite being signed to a minor league contract, he was released by the Marlins after failing to make the team.

This is a low-risk option for the Phillies to improve their outfield depth, which has been weakened recently, particularly in center field. With an awkward oblique landing, Odubel Herrera made his way to the IL.

The White Sox acquired Adam Haseley in a move that surprised many because they were intending to rely on a center field platoon that included Matt Vierling and Mickey Moniak. But on Friday, Moniak was ruled out for the rest of the season with a fractured right hand, reducing the team’s depth in the center.
