According to his agent, Cedric Saunders, Dwayne Haskins, the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, died Saturday morning after being hit by a car. Haskins was 24 years old at the time.
Haskins was training with the Steelers’ quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers in South Florida.
“With the terrible passing of Dwayne Haskins, I am devastated and at a lost for words,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement. Dwayne was a fantastic teammate, but he was also a great friend to many people. I’m heartbroken, to say the least. “Upon his arrival in Pittsburgh, he soon became a member of our Steelers family and was one of our hardest workers, both on and off the field.”
“During this terrible moment, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Calabria, and his entire family.”
Haskins was taken 15th overall in the 2019 draft by the Washington Commanders after a successful 2018 season at Ohio State.
Before last season, Haskins endured two tumultuous seasons with Washington before joining Pittsburgh.
“We are heartbroken to learn of Dwayne Haskins Jr.’s terrible death,” owners Daniel and Tanya Snyder said. It’s an understatement to say we’re devastated. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dwayne’s family and everyone who knew and loved him.” “He was a young man with many potentials who had a contagious attitude.”
“This is a tough time for me, and I’m at a loss for words.” in a statement, Commanders coach Ron Rivera said, “Dwayne was a gifted young guy who had a full life ahead of him.” He will be deeply missed, and I know I speak for the rest of our team when I say that. At this time, our entire staff is offering deepest sympathies, thoughts, and prayers to the Haskins family.”
Haskins appeared in 15 games with Washington over two seasons, compiling a Total QBR of 29.4, much below the league average of 63.5. He threw 14 interceptions to 12 touchdown passes.
Haskins’ stint in Washington began with considerable controversy, as scouts and coaches fought Snyder’s decision to take him with the 15th overall choice. Haskins was a household name in the area, having starred at Bullis High School in Potomac, Maryland, for three seasons.
Haskins started seven games as a rookie and the first four games of the next season but was benched following a 30-10 loss to Baltimore. Later that season, Washington released Haskins, and they went unclaimed on waivers. In January 2021, he signed a reserve/future contract with Pittsburgh.
Haskins expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and stated that he was excited to work hard and learn as much as he could from Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph. After Roethlisberger was placed in the COVID-19 protocol the night before the game, he made the roster as a third-stringer but only dressed once as the backup in a draw with Detroit.
Rudolph just tweeted, “Devastated,” in response to the news of Haskins’ death.
A linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, T.J. Watt described Haskins as an “upbeat guy.”
The world lost a great person today. When Dwayne first walked into the locker room I could tell he was an upbeat guy. He was always making people smile, never taking life for granted. His impact on me will last a forever.

Both Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert praised Haskins’ progress since joining the team, and the Steelers re-signed him as a restricted free agent in March to a one-year deal. He was expected to contend for a position with Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky.
“We’re interested to see what Dwayne can bring to the table, whether through competition or as a starter,” Colbert said in January.
At Ohio State, Haskins achieved his most tremendous on-field success. After spending his first two seasons behind J.T. Barrett, Haskins pushed out Joe Burrow to become the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback for the 2018-19 season.
Haskins followed up the choice of the Ohio State coaching staff by putting together possibly the finest passing season in program history. In addition to a total of 28 school records, he set Big Ten single-season records for passing yards (4,831), touchdown passes (50), and total offensive yards (4,939).
After his record-breaking season, Haskins was named a Heisman Trophy finalist and a third-team AP All-American.
Haskins threw for three touchdowns and 251 yards in his final game as a Buckeye, a Rose Bowl triumph over Washington.

“The Ohio State Department of Athletics is heartbroken to learn of Dwayne Haskins’ death early Saturday morning,” the school said. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to his family and his present and past teammates, coaches, friends, and relatives.” “we think of the entire Haskins family during this tough moment.”
