The city’s police chief stated a 26-year-old male was arrested in connection with Sunday’s horrific mass shooting.
Dandrae Martin was arrested and charged with assault with a handgun and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, police Chief Kathy Lester told KCRA 3’s, Ty Steele.
For now, that’s all we can say about him, she said. “As you know, this is a difficult investigation and we’re looking for several people,” he said. The department called Martin a “related suspect” in a press release.
SWAT officers and investigators executed search warrants at three nearby homes. Police say one firearm was recovered. Deputy District Attorney Ann Marie Schubert said Martin has not been charged with homicide.
“The inquiry is quite complex, involving several witnesses, videos, and tangible evidence,” she stated. “This is a continuing investigation and we expect further arrests. Our prosecutors’ ethics prohibit us from commenting on the case’s specifics. We will analyze the evidence and determine what charges, if any, are justified. The complaint will be made public if charges are brought.”
KCRA 3 Investigates revealed Martin has a criminal record. Martin has been on the run since 2015. His arrest warrant for misdemeanor domestic violence is still active. Martin allegedly “inflicted bodily injury resulting in a traumatic condition” on his wife.
Martin pled guilty in 2014 and received 30 days in jail and 36 months probation. The court issued a $5,000 bench warrant in 2015.
Martin also served time in an Arizona prison, KCRA 3 learned. A year and a half later, in 2020, he was released after being convicted of two felonies: attempted aggravated assault in 2016 and marijuana possession in 2018.
Martin is being held without bond in the Sacramento County Jail and is due in court Tuesday. Lester said early Sunday morning shooting killed six individuals and injured 12 others during a huge fight downtown.
She stated numerous shooters were suspected and a stolen pistol was found at the site. She said on Monday that at least three buildings and three cars were hit by gunfire, with over 100 shell casings collected.

“We know a lot of bullets were fired that night, thus the investigation’s complexity,” Lester said. She stated cops are still looking for shooters. She also said detectives were looking through over a hundred pieces of evidence and video from a police camera at 10th and K streets. “Gun violence is a crisis in our neighborhood and has risen across the country,” Lester added.
