According to the sheriff’s office, a 16-year-old hiker from Plumas County’s Lakes Basin who had been missing since Sunday evening with her dog was located on Monday afternoon. Officials announced at about 4:30 p.m. that search and rescue personnel had spotted Camila ‘Mila’ Schweyer and were working to get her out of the area so medics could check her.
According to Plumas County dispatch, Schweyer was chilly and tired but unhurt. She was assessed by medical personnel and returned to her family. Officials tell KCRA 3 that the dog was also found safely with her. Schweyer’s mother reported her missing at 6 p.m. Sunday after she failed to return from a trek. Schweyer had been dropped off near the Elwell Lodge in Plumas National Forest and was hiking with a little “Chihuahua-type dog,” according to the sheriff’s office.
Plumas County search and rescue crews, as well as a California Highway Patrol helicopter from Redding, searched all night for Schweyer but could not locate her. The sheriff’s office requested assistance from the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to continue the search on Monday. According to the sheriff’s office, she was only prepared for a day trek and intended to go for 15 to 45 minutes. Temperatures in the area where she disappeared can drop into the 30s, according to the sheriff’s office.
