Months after a critically damaged and starved dog, likely chained for months, had to be euthanized, the Lauderhill woman who was supposed to care for the dog was arrested.
Alison Marie Arthur, 28, was arrested Thursday on charges of animal abuse that resulted in death, pain, or suffering to an animal, according to records. According to an arrest record, investigators believe the dog, Orey, sustained for a long time before March 10, when Broward County Animal Control was called to a home on Northwest 55th Avenue for reports of “a dog being tied up 24/7 without food and water.”
Orey was discovered attached by a chain to what seemed to be an old, rusted weight set, with wide open sores on her neck and pus leaking from a gash, the report stated. “It was advised that an iguana might have bitten the dog, and that’s what caused the sores,” according to the investigation. “The entire circumference of the dog’s neck had an injury with the pungent odor of infection.”
Orey was also underweight, with his ribs, hips, and spine exposed, according to the report. Investigators were told Orey’s neck had been like that for almost two weeks, and the dog had a seriously lodged collar that required emergency attention.
According to the report, Arthur’s father stated that he did not have the finances and could not get the dog to the vet due to filthy conditions in his car. “Due to the extent of the wounds and lack of ability to take the dog to the vet, it was an owner give up, with a request for euthanasia,” according to the report. “The request was approved.”
Investigators were told that the dog bit a youngster in the house a few months after they got Orey and that the dog had been chained to the weights ever since. One witness stated that the dog had been outside on the chain for nine months to a year, sat on the patio, and was not walking. According to the witness, Orey was not fed regularly and was fighting to come off the chain. According to the story, one neighbor fed the dog and noticed it was uncomfortable.
According to the report, Arthur was interviewed by police and stated that she was the dog’s primary caretaker and had obtained Orey from a random individual online. She claimed Orey was kept inside until she bit Arthur’s son, was not chained until she escaped from the patio, and had been chained for approximately three months, according to the report. Arthur further stated that Orey was not exposed to the sun on the patio and was provided food and water daily, according to the report. According to the complaint, she also stated that she would apply hydrogen peroxide to the wounds daily, but Orey refused to let her remove the collars. The investigation indicated that Arthur’s treatment of Orey caused “excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering.” Arthur was put into jail and appeared in court on Friday, where her bond was set at $15,000. She was also told not to have any pets.
