Shannon Amos posted on Instagram yesterday night: “I am without words…Our family has got the devastating news that my father, John Allen Amos, Jr., died on August 21st. We are horrified and are concerned about how this happened 45 days ago, as many of you have learned through the media.

There was no explanation provided in the announcement of Amos’ death for the monthlong interval between the actor’s death and its public exposure. Deadline has reached out to Kelly Amos’s spokesperson for further comments. The Amos family has been divided for at least a year, with Shannon accusing her brother of neglecting to provide proper health care for their elderly father, who died at the age of 84. Shannon claimed in a June 2023 Instagram post that her father had been “a victim of elder abuse and financial exploitation,” which Kelly and John Amos denied. The Los Angeles Police Department investigated but closed the case due to insufficient evidence.

After the split was revealed last year, John Amos told People magazine, “Suffice it to say we are still family, and we love each other, and that’s the bottom line.” Shannon Amos wrote in an Instagram post last night, accompanied by a touching video of Shannon slow-dancing with her father to Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father,” that “This should be a time of honoring and celebrating his life, yet we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing.” Even so, knowing my father is finally free gives me some serenity.
