TikTok Inc. will stop its music service in November, capping a years-long effort to compete with Spotify Technology SA and Apple Inc. According to a notice on the music division’s website, TikTok Music will go offline on November 28th, and all user data will be destroyed. Users were instructed to transfer playlists to other services no later than October 28.
Instead of competing with music streaming services, TikTok will direct users to them through its “Add To Music App” feature, according to a corporate statement released on Tuesday. The tool introduced last year allows TikTok users to save their favorite music to playlists on partner services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon.
TikTok’s owner, ByteDance Ltd., launched the music service to leverage on the app’s power and popularity among music lovers. TikTok videos have been credited with the rise of hit songs and new performers. Still, they have also resulted in disputes with record companies, who have sought increased compensation for exploiting their material.
