The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office is planning an extraordinary grand jury session to secure indictments against a Masonville man accused of stabbing his pregnant wife to death.
The New York State Police conducted a news conference today at Troop C headquarters in Sidney to provide more information concerning the arrest of Drew Garnier, 32. Garnier allegedly fatally stabbed his 29-year-old wife, Samantha Garnier, as well as his two daughters, ages 6 and 9, who were critically injured. Samantha Garnier was evacuated to Wilson Hospital and later died.
Both toddlers are being treated at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse and are expected to recover fully. Major Lucas Shuta commands Troop C. “Family members have arrived from outside the neighborhood and will care for the girls after they are released. The State Police would like to express their condolences to the family and thank all of the first responders who aided in this tragic situation,” Shuta said. Drew Garnier was detained on the scene and sent to AO Fox Hospital for treatment of minor superficial wounds sustained during the alleged attack. He is now in the Delaware County Jail on no bail.
Samantha Garnier died five months into her pregnancy. District Attorney Shawn Smith was questioned if that may lead to a second murder accusation. “The short answer is: no, it is not. We’ll check into that and see if there are any charges that we can bring. But it’s not what you think or want. “No, it’s not two murders because the child died,” Smith explained. Smith said Garnier’s felony hearing is planned for next Wednesday, but he intends to pursue a grand jury indictment before that. State police accused Garnier of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
