Newlyweds accused of fatally running over groomsman following wedding after-party

After being declared husband and wife, a man, 22, and a woman, 21, were taken into custody shortly after because it was alleged that the groomsman was killed when the man was run over during an argument.

At approximately 8 p.m. on August 30, officers from the Flint Police Department responded to a report regarding a collision involving injuries to a pedestrian on the 1400 block of East Hamilton Avenue. Terry Lewis Taylor Jr. was found to have suffered serious injuries when they arrived. He passed away in a local hospital after paramedics took him there.

According to information obtained by the investigators, Taylor, 29, was one of the groomsmen for James Shirah and Savanah Collier at their wedding earlier that day.

Police said Taylor was “involved in an argument” after the wedding, “which led to him being intentionally struck by a large SUV that was travelling at a high rate of speed and driven by the groom.”

Collier was charged with accessory after the fact, and Shirah was taken into custody on a charge of second-degree murder.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton told WJRT-TV Taylor’s killing was a “terrible series of events,” adding, “You can’t take the law into your own hands. That’s apparently what happened here.”

After the event, Collier and Shirah are said to have left the location and hidden until they were apprehended.
