Two students and two instructors were slain in yesterday’s shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. Nine others were injured but are expected to recover.
The 14-year-old suspect, Colt Gray, who used an AR-style rifle in the shooting, surrendered and was apprehended within minutes. He was charged with four charges of murder today.
Colin Gray, 54, the suspect’s father, was arrested on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of child maltreatment, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced today. The suspect was a fresh student at Apalachee High who had just spent a few hours there. According to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith, the shooting occurred on his first full day at the school. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the victims as Mason Schermerhorn, 14, Christian Angulo, 14, Cristina Irimie, 53, and Richard Aspinwall, 39.
Winder will hold a memorial service for the victims on Friday:
The community of Winder, Georgia, where Wednesday’s school shooting occurred, will have a memorial service for the victims tomorrow. The “A Light in the Dark” gathering will begin at 6 p.m. at Jug Tavern Park, which also hosted a vigil on Wednesday evening. “This event will pay respect with a memorial service for those who lost their lives and the families affected,” the city stated in the notice.
The mother of the shooting suspect was arrested on charges related to family violence:
The mother of the 14-year-old suspect in Wednesday’s shooting was arrested last year on a family violence charge, according to court documents. Gray pleaded guilty in December to one count of second-degree criminal damage to property and criminal trespass-family violence, according to Barrow County online records. An original warrant with more information was unavailable on the court’s website Thursday night. According to the sentencing record, Gray was instructed not to contact Colin Gray, the suspected school shooter’s father, unless through a third party regarding children or a divorce.
Some of the injured victims have been released from the hospital:
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith stated that several of the nine victims injured in Wednesday’s shooting are still hospitalized, while others have been released. “All nine people that are injured are expected to make a full recovery,” Smith announced. The shooting at Apalachee High School killed four people, including two students and two adults. Colin Gray, the father of the 14-year-old school shooting suspect, faces charges related to the gun, GBI Director Chris Hosey said today. “These charges stem from Mr. Gray knowingly allowing his son Colt to possess a weapon,” Hosey said during a press conference.
