Authorities in Michigan announced on Thursday that a newlywed couple has been accused in connection with the death of a groomsman who was hit by a car on the wedding day.
James Shirah, the groom, was driving when the SUV struck Terry Taylor Jr. in Flint on August 30, according to the police.
“(Taylor) got into an argument after the wedding, and as a result, a big SUV that was moving quickly struck him on purpose,” according to the police.
22-year-old Shirah was accused of second-degree murder. The public defence office for Genesee County announced on Thursday that the case was still pending assignment of counsel.
Taylor, 29, was referred to by police as a groomsman.
“I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” said David Leyton, who is in his 20th year as county prosecutor. “I’ve seen people running over other people but not so soon after a wedding.”
Leyton stated that the wedding took place at a pizzeria, citing the police record. At a residence where the party went on, there was an argument.
According to Leyton, Taylor was struck by the SUV while he was standing in the street in front of the home.
He continued, saying that it was “more difficult to unravel what happened” because the bride and groom fled the scene and didn’t contact the police until the following day.
Shirah was being held without bond in a prison cell. His wife, who is 21 years old, was accused of being an accessory. On Wednesday, she posted her bond.
