After reportedly robbing a funeral facility of a coffin carrying a body and disposing of the body in front of the funeral home before fleeing, a lady was taken into custody in Nevada.
According to Clark County records, Patricia Sierra, 47, is accused of grand larceny, business burglary, and taking, transferring, or disturbing human remains. According to local Fox affiliate KVVU, she allegedly broke in via a front window and unlocked the front door of Affordable Cremation and Burial Services in Las Vegas on August 27.
The station was able to collect surveillance footage that purports to show someone shattering the front glass, entering the establishment, making their way to the viewing room, stealing the casket, and leaving through the front door. KVVU reported that Sierra entered and exited the store several times before finally departing, citing police records.
Someone noticed the casket and a face-down body next to it outside of Affordable Cremation and Burial Services at roughly 3:30 in the morning, according to KVVU. According to authorities, paperwork discovered next to the body indicated that the victim’s viewing had taken place the day before.
There were allegedly “flower petals on the floor leading out the door,” according to local CBS affiliate KLAS, which cited the police report. It was thought that nothing else in the building had sustained any damage.
On August 20, the deceased individual showed up at the funeral home, according to KLAS as well.
During a police interrogation, Sierra allegedly disclosed that she suffers from substance usage and experiences “blackouts.” She claimed to police that she didn’t recall the incident, but KVVU said she had broken into a company in the past by using a rock to smash through the door or the window.
“[S]he was not trying to be malicious and was apologetic,” the police report said, according to KVVU. She later reportedly said she drank six beers.
Sheriff’s office records indicate that Sierra was taken into custody on August 30. Sierra’s hearing is scheduled on September 18 and her bail was set at $11,000, according to court documents.
