One of the three suspects charged in the 2022 Sacramento mass shooting, Smiley Martin, had his cause of death made public on Wednesday.
The coroner for Sacramento County announced on Wednesday that Martin’s cause of death was methadone intoxication. Opioid addiction is usually treated with methadone.
During a cell check in early June, deputies from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office discovered an inmate to be unresponsive. The prisoner passed away there in spite of attempts to save his life.
Martin’s lawyer, Norman Dawson, attested to the fact that his client passed away.
On April 2, 2022, Martin was one of three individuals charged in connection with the mass shooting in Sacramento. Authorities reported that the shooting, which left six people dead and numerous more injured, was a gang brawl involving “multiple rivals.”
Mtula Payton, another guy, and Martin’s brother Dandrae Martin were both charged with murder in connection with the incident. Each of the three has a prior criminal record.
