TikTok Unveils STEM Feed: Inspiring Careers and Education for Young Minds

TikTok plans to launch a new STEM feed to ignite curiosity and promote interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among its users.

Scheduled to debut alongside the popular For You page, this feed aims to serve as a gateway for young people in the UK and Ireland to explore STEM topics and potentially consider future careers in these fields.

Dr. Nellist’s Vision for the STEM Feed

The STEM feed was decided to start when TikTok noticed that over the previous three years, around 15 million films relevant to STEM had been shared worldwide. A growing number of artists have garnered substantial followings through the dissemination of interesting and educational STEM-related content, suggesting that people are becoming more interested in these topics.

Dr. Clara Nellist, a particle physicist at CERN, is one well-known person creating waves in the STEM field. Dr. Nellist showcases her scientific pursuits to her 206,000 followers on TikTok, where she shares videos of her experiments where she “smashes protons together at almost the speed of light.”

Dr. Nellist sees the STEM feed as an exciting opportunity to make science more accessible to a broader audience, potentially inspiring individuals who may not have previously considered STEM careers.

Likewise, Eleonora Svanberg, a PhD candidate in theoretical physics at Oxford University, views the STEM feed as a means of empowering young people, particularly women, to seek careers in STEM subjects.

By presenting STEM in an approachable and personal manner, Svanberg dispels the myth that STEM occupations are intimidating or exclusive. He has more than 136,000 TikTok followers. TikTok aims to create a space exclusively for educational resources and STEM role models, making them more accessible to everyone.

Users under the age of 18 will have the option to deactivate the STEM feed at any time, although it will be enabled by default. Users who are above eighteen will be able to enable the feed in the app’s content settings.

The introduction of the STEM feed is a major step in the right direction toward making education interesting and accessible to a wide spectrum of individuals, especially given TikTok’s ongoing influence over digital culture and user engagement.

Through the use of social media, TikTok has the ability to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, and inventors.
