South Korea Raises Alarm Over China’s Water Cannon Incident Involving Philippine Ships

The foreign ministry of South Korea criticized China’s deployment of water cannons on Philippine ships, stating that it jeopardizes maritime stability and heightens tensions in the South China Sea.

In the disputed Spratly Islands archipelago in the South China Sea, on Saturday, the Chinese coast guard used water cannons against a civilian boat bringing supplies for the troops.

Escalating Tensions

This move is the latest in a line of conflicts arising from territorial disputes in the area between China and the Philippines. The spokesperson for Seoul’s foreign ministry, Lim Soo-suk, expressed severe worries and underlined the negative effects of such acts on peace and stability in the region.

In addition to increasing tensions, the deployment of water cannons imperils the freedom of navigation, a fundamental value protected by international law. The Philippines protested the incident, claiming that the boat was damaged and that its crew members were injured.

Beijing, noting the fragile status of bilateral relations, advised Manila to proceed cautiously and to engage in talks. Under the Yoon Suk Yeol government, South Korea’s position on the South China Sea problem is consistent with its larger foreign policy tenets.
